Oil filter housing leak

I am wondering if anyone had a leak at the oil filter housing. I didnt expect it since it seems an unlikely place but was noted when I sent the car for the bluetec mod. Also wondering is anyone able to share the repair scope for it, doc from x sentry.

hope the picture helps, it looks legit leaking. I might do it when I change the engine oil with fuel filter, air filter etc in august. Oil level seems fine, so the leak mustn't be much. I didnt think the black cooler thing to be blocking even when changing belts...as always thank you for any help , comments and guidance. I need to figure the part #..

Clean it away (brake cleaner or damp rag) and see if it comes back. Looks like an old and not significant leak.

If the belt looks fine, it likely is. If you can see cracks in the ribs, it needs to be replaced. While the belt is off, spin everything that the belt touches. If it feels or sounds like it needs replacing, now's the time.

Changing the belt on the gas V6 is a breeze. 20 minute job if you take your time. Not sure about the diesel, but it should be straightforward.

I recently changed the gaskets in my oil filter housing of my 2012 ML350 diesel. I initially just replaced the main gasket where it attaches to the block but not the one in the the middle. Which was stupid as the gasket in the middle was leaking too. I just didn’t notice that it only leaked upon start up, then stopped once oil pressure built up. Can’t figure that one out. Both gaskets were hard as a rock and difficult to remove, be careful not to score the metal housing if you use a metal pick. Try gasket remover or similar to loosen the rubber gasket. The OFH has been leak free since replacement. it’s not a difficult job, look on YouTube for instructions on what to remove to get at it.

Also listening, so far I have not experienced this. Maybe it will be useful next time and I hope I don't experience it

I've had an ongoing leak with mine as well and have many things "fixed", but it never seems to stop. At this point this car has become such a headache!! There's always something wrong.

I just had the entire housing replaced by the dealer;. It was about $1200. I also asked to have the drive belt replaced as you have to remove it to replace the entire housing, and the factory belt already had seen 100,000+ miles already.

Had my whole housing replaced, new belt and oil, change for $882. 117,000 miles, I have had good service from my Dealer and they told me if they just replaced gasket it would leak again from experience with many Sprinters. For t house who diy, be prepared it is very messy with leaking oil getting everywhere when housing is removed

Interesting. Ours started leaking after the bluetec mod as well. Had to replace the entire assembly. Makes me wonder if the mod is making the engine run hotter and causing issues with the gaskets and perhaps stressing the assembly where the metal is not strong enough.

Todd. It turns out my filter housing had leaked. So I had the dealer change the entire housing about $850 CAD. It was noted to me during the bluetec mod but I ignored it. A few months later the leak got worse. Was hoping it was covered under the new warranty, no bueno. Also one of the injector went bad, changed under warranty but was given re-man and was told new ones not available. I call bs since Europe still has bluetec but left is as since I’ll be stone walled. Got better things to spend time on.

these leaks appear to be the classic leaks of the tappet gasket and oil heat exchanger

How long should it take to remove and replace the oil filter housing?

Not sure. From photos and reading posts on this site, I would guess in the range of 4 hours for an intermediate-level DIYer. Just a guess.

Not one hour and not 8 hours. Somewhere in 4 hours +/- an hour or two.

Adhering to torque specs is important, and also replacing screws when specified is important. MB uses aluminum and magnesium on the front/upper parts of engines, if not using plastic. Al and Mg are weak metals and Al screws are often used with VERY low torque specs, and these Al screws are single use (must be replaced). Not sure if this applies to the oil filter housing on the OM642, but is offered here as a general precaution.

These engines are about as far away as you can get from a small block Chevy.

Mine started leaking as well. Wouid you guys recommend changing the gaskets only or the whole oil filter housing?

May I ask which dealer did it for $850 cad? Downtown Calgary Mercedes just quoted me $1200 for the same thing.

If you are handy enough, $150 USD for the oil filter housing from FCP Euro which includes the housing and new filter cover.

Part # 642 180 141 064

The replacement is not difficult as I recall it.
