Since your vehicle is a 2012, it is likely in the range that requires either the check valve, or the new chain tensioners per MB-Technical bulletin. Please use the following to determine your exact engine number https://www.lastvin.com/

If your vehicle has had the AEM Field Measure done, the timing chain will be covered under the extended warranty. I had a very similar issue in a 2013 GL (Same OM642 engine) and it would rattle for a few seconds upon a cold start up.
Took it to the dealer for the rattle and they found the chain was out of spec and replaced under the warranty. Never had a rattle since.

Without looking at anything and assuming you have the gas variant, it is most likely the Timing Chain Tensioners that have failed + Check Valve.
Since yours is a 2012, it most likely does not have them.
Symptoms of this is Rattle on Cold Start Up; see someone has linked the bulletin, refer to that for more details.

Does it have an extended startup cranking from time to time as well? If so, could also be the Cam adjuster. It will cause both the startup rattle and extended start crank (like 3+ seconds). Typical causes are, as stated above, missing oil pressure check valve, chain tensioner(s) worn out, cam adjusting gear assembly worn out.
