Welcome New Members
I LIVE IN ALIWAL NORTH.... A SMALL TOWN ON THE BORDER WITH THE FREE STATE AND THE EASTERN CAPE . I OWN A MERCEDES C180 CLASSIC 1991 FACELIFT . I HAVE BEEN AND STILL AM VERY HAPPY WITH MY CAR , UNTIL THE PAST FEW WEEKS . ALL OF A SUDDEN , AND WITHOUT NOTICE , THE VEHICLE SOMETIMES REFUSES TO START . AS AN EXAMPLE : THIS MORNING , AT ABOUT 4:00 , I STARTED MY CAR IN THE GARAGE AND DROVE OFF FOR AN EMERGENCY , ABOUT 6 KMS AWAY . AFTER BEING AT MY DESTINATION FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES , I GOT INTO MY CAR AGAIN TO GO HOME BUT IT SIMPLY REFUSED TO START . AFTER TRYING ABOUT 30 TIMES , I LEFT MY CAR THERE AND ASKED A FRIEND TO PICK ME UP . AT 6:30 AM , i RETURNED TO MY VEHICLE AND TRIED..... IT STARTED ..... I TOOK IT FOR A SHORT DRIVE , ABOUT ANOTHER 6 OR 7 KM . AND RETURNED TO MY WORK PLACE . I TURNED OFF THE ENGINE , WAITED A MINUTE OR SO AND TRIED STARTING IT AGAIN . IT STARTED .
AT 8:00 AM , I HAD TO GO OUT TO VISIT A CLIENT AND WHEN I GOT INTO THE CAR , ONCE AGAIN IT REFUSED TO START .
IT HAS BEEN DOING THIS FOR A FEW WEEKS NOW , AND I HAVE SHOWN IT TO A FEW MECHANICS IN TOWN , AND EVEN AFTER CONNECTING THE CAR TO THE COMPUTERS , THEY CANT SEEM TO PICK UP THE PROBLEM .
MAYBE YOU COULD HELP ME WITH SOME MORE INSIGHT INTO THIS ISSUE .
TIA!

My name is Marty and I own a 2010 e350. My first new car purchase ever for myself and a MB to boot. Love my car, now I have restless car syndrome and am thinking about upgrading to a bigger engine. I bought the Benz because I have three children and I thought the back seat experience was nicest in the Benz. I compared the BMW 5 series and Audi A6. I dream of an e63. Am I crazy? E550 seems like a really nice upgrade. Thoughts?
Greetings and all the best wishes for the new year!

I am Michael and own a 2001 E320 4Matic that I try to take really good care of. I've discovered my alternator is dead and my shop is about thirty miles away in Portland, OR. I am wondering if, on a fully charged battery (no headlights or other unnecessary electrical stuff on) if I dare to make the trip rather than have it towed? I've never tried running the car on battery only (well long enough to take it a couple miles to have the battery/alternator checked out) and have no idea how much run time I may have.
Thanks very much!
Michael
When my alternator went out I drove it for about thirty miles. It was at night and the lights were almost off so I pulled it over and shut it off ...it wouldnt turn over so i got a rade home the next day went back and it started drove bout ten miles and it just started loosing power.
So by that with a full battery I think its possible
My name is eudez, from Los Angeles. I bought my ML 320 as second owner, it had 35K, now i drove 113K to it, no major problems so far.
Wanted to keep it to the max so, started to fix on my own some important vehicle maintenance to fully control the quality.
Thanks to the forum a great website to Mbenz owners.
2011 C300 Sport 4MATIC
I'm jealous as I've always wanted an "S" body car..they're really very nice and roomy, too.
I've had three SL's, a 220S and currently, an E320 4Matic which I really like a lot. I've been driving these cars since I was 25 (40 years!) and have been using the same shop throughout that time...we're like old friends.
These cars can bite you repair cost-wise, so I make it a practice to take really good care of mine and fix even the smallest problem immediately. My E320 has almost 170,000 miles on it and it drives--and looks--like the day I bought it. They know how to build a car over there!
Good Luck!
Michael
I made the trip fine in the E320. In fact, because the battery itself also was bad, I had to do it a second time earlier this week. I drove it about twenty miles with the headlights running a week ago, Friday, and it did that just fine, too, even with a defective battery. However, I manually charged the battery for several hours before I did any of these trips.
Now I see that the left two thirds of the instrument cluster lamps are dead, inexplicably. So now I have another project. I think I will just buy lamps and do the work myself unless my shop decides to be nice to me on this one. It happened immediately after the last trip there, though I can't imagine what they might have done to cause such a thing and, as I've said elsewhere, I've used them for forty years on all my MB's without a single problem, so I'm not wanting to point a finger at them! Things happen, that's all.
Have a great day and a good weekend, everyone!
Michael
Much thanks.
