Problem filling up at the gas station

I took my 2015 S550 to the dealership service center because I can't get any gas pump to flow for more than five seconds before the automatic shut off mechanism kicks in. On some designs, this requires you to physically remove and then reinsert the nozzle. My service adviser gave me information on a 2014 service advisory which explains the mechanism in the car and the recommendation that the nozzle be inserted completely and then pushed down. However, this does not work. I've tried a dozen different gas stations.

I noticed a thread on W221 with fueling problems related to a carbon filter. Has anyone with a W222 had problems filling up at the gas station? It's so bad with repeated reinsertions that I'm seeing small metal shavings at the neck which I hope the fuel filter will catch downstream.

I had the exact same problem. It was the carbon filter. It was replaced under the extended warranty. I no longer have any issues.

Thanks! I was pretty sure it's the charcoal filter when I read the W221 thread. Service advisor says that without the car throwing an error code, I need to take a ride to the gas station with one of the service supervisors. I think this could easily have been diagnosed when I dropped off my car the first time around had the advisor listened to me. Oh well... at least I'm under warranty. I'll make sure I go by on a near empty tank.

Try to turn the nozzle 180deg upside down and start filling. You get some looks for that but it works. Take care not to scratch the paint.
I did not have the issue with my 18 s560 yet, but I had it in all 7-series and my 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee. This trick has been posted years ago in a BMW forum and saved my nerves.

I have the same issue. What i do notice is if i go to a gas station that does not have the funny looking rubber neck on them, it works with no issues. Problem for me i go to my local Costco for gas because they are always the cheapest in town but, their nozzles have the rubber necks on them. Pain for me because i go to them. I asked my indy service guy about it at my last service and he said the same thing. Without going with me to the gas station to see it happen he can not diagnose because i have no error codes in the car.

so i just deal with it when i am at the costco. Turning it some does help but i can never take my hand off the handle while filling up because in my mind i know it will shut off.

Mine does it too! Drive me crazy. I have to pump very slow and some pumps are too fast to pump at all. Can the carbon filter be changed easily or is that better left to the dealer?

I had the same problem with my C300. Had to hold the nozzle the whole time. With my S450 at the same station and same fill nozzle it works normally. Go figure!

Update - I took the S550 back to the dealership. The charcoal cannister was replaced under warranty. The problem has disappeared. I can now fuel up at any gas station without problems.

Years ago I was a member of the local BMW Z3 club and 70-75% of us had problems with the gas gauge sticking on “full” all the time. Thinking we had some clout as a group our president wrote a letter to BMW explaining the problem most of us were having. A month later he received a reply letter stating that most car owners did not know the proper way to fill the gas tank and there was nothing wrong with the cars. Typical German thinking! LOL

Glad to hear. I'm not under warranty. Does your invoice show how much it would have cost?

Occasionally this can be caused by "topping off" your tank. When the autofill shuts off, it is best to stop additional pumping.

I agree but it’s hard to believe one could have 80 people in one car club overfilling their gas tanks.

Next time you are at a gas station, just take a look around you and notice how many people top off their tanks; it's epidemic.

I used to top off my 2010 and this happened to me also. I don’t top off my 2016 just Incase.

Anyone know how much dealer charges to change out the carbon canister?
