Mercedes all the way!
hmm, actually i don't mind the looks - the front is quite nice - but strangely, it reminds me of a Honda City. somebody above said Acura RL - hey, is toyota hiring Honda designers nowadays? :p the flanks are a direct copy of the ES300, and so are the rear lights (ES300 facelift, at least).
so basically, looks like a bigger, nicer, toyota camry (which is based off the ES i think).
i'll reserve judgment until i see the real thing. but the GS300 looked quite nice - i won't think of it as a E-class competitor (as it is billed as) but i can see the appeal. same for the new LS.

After seeing a GS430 tonight, and of course killing it with the E55, I see quite a big resemblence to the new GS. In fact it looks too much like th new GS and it might hurt Lexus. The new LS needs more individuality, and that is something it lacks and always has IMO.

lexus has never been inferior with mbenz against reliability and build quality, perhaps only inferior in the styling department.

Actually, while you're making fun of Lexus/Toyota...
JD power rates Lexus more reliable and have fewer initial quality flaws then toyotas (meaning you add more options, you dont get more problems to go with it)
Whereas JD power discovered Mercedes had higher initial quality flaws in mercedes then chrysler (meaning you add options, add problems not reliability)

braheem: but what features does Lexus have that Toyota doesn't. the cars are the same. it's impossible to distinguish highly specced JDM Toyotas from lexus. so all it means is either (1) JD Powers is inaccuate, or (2) they quality-test their Lexus-badged models more thoroughly than their Toyota-badged ones. whereas chrysler uses older Merc parts, if at all. so the comparison is not accurate.
how many would actually buy this LS460 instead of an S450?
for some reason the design seems to reflect a positioning one rung below the S-class -nothing really different or pretty or impressive - and the pricing reflects that too. looks like a big Acura to me.
i've not seen it in person, and i've never seen the interior yet, so i won't comment more - some pictures of the W221 looked quite strange as well - but i seriously doubt it will provide real competition for the S.

Must see
Check out the OFFICIAL Lexus Tokyo Motor Show site.
The videos of the LF-A and the new LF-Sh are simply killer!
http://lexus.jp/ms/
The bandwidth isn't great from the US though so you'll probably want to stick to the 300kbps ones, or the 500kbps if you're lucky.
