Definitely agree… that corridor is very busy. It makes up the three busy areas we go through, with north of Indianapolis and the beltway, depending on time of day, and of course the Maryland area around Baltimore/ DC.

Another trip and enjoying the miles as they go by. So comfortable. Another cold trip with snow and messy conditions. Thought we had a good window but weather does its own thing. Snow, slush, flurries, and wind.

The good news is the fuel door closed every time without drama but that damn trunk. It doesn’t like the cold and will not latch. When leaving in the morning, it was in the garage, warm, and it worked fine as I put stuff in. Then moved it closer to the house and it sat out for about 30 min in 17F temps… loaded more then tried to close it, nope, popped open. Green button didn’t help. Got my wife’s hairdryer and warmed it up and like magic it latches. 20 min later we were off. Aggravating.

The rest of the trip was cold, 15-20F, and it wouldn’t latch at each stop. The mechanism cycled oddly like it didn’t know what to do. Sometimes it would try and latch and others nothing and it would pop open. My solution was to cup my hands, breathe on it, cycle the green button and after 15 min or so, and multiple attempts, it would warm up and latch. No bungee this trip. Got to our house here, mid 30s it worked perfectly.

Some pics along the way. Biggest hassle was snow and mess in Indiana and crazy winds in SD. Always winds in SD!

A few more. Big roads, lots of miles, and no one around. Driver aids really help, lane assist, etc.

Nice pictures! As a Texan, I can appreciate wide open spaces and those are some beautiful ones in your pictures!

My car's electronics have often acted a bit flaky in cold weather, so hopefully your trunk lid will behave itself once it warms up.

That's so strange with the latch. My car is nearly 10 years old and has never had this problem, even when temps hit -20. I wonder if it's an issue that happens more with the face-lifted cars?

I had a 2015 S550 that did the same thing. Glad you don’t have this problem. So annoying.

Got out in the S a couple days ago. We’re mainly using our new X5 as a DD. Headed to Wind Cave NP for a tour. They finally got new elevators so they’re back in business! Nice drive there, beautiful cave, and nice tour. It lasted about an hour. It’s up to 14,5xx miles.

Not sure yet. Similar day trips while looking after mom. Would love to do an extended road trip. Back east in a month or so then back to SD when heat and humidity hits the mid-Atlantic. I’ll definitely take pics and share.

We love it. Got the 50e PHEV. No mild hybrid 48v system. Very comfortable and quiet. Very quick too… 483 hp! Ordered it back in Maryland, got tinting done, etc., and had it shipped west in December. Love the Assist Plus too. It’s at just over 1,800 miles.

I am getting a CEL with codes for the O2 sensor. I’ve cleared them a couple times. Doubt it’s the O2 sensor based on when it pops - mainly in EV mode. Why does it think the O2 sensor is involved? I could replace it, looks like an easy job, luckily it’s easily accessible. From the BMW sites many are getting CELs for various reasons.

See if this link works, I’ve posted about the X5:

Looks great! The PHEV is what I would get too. I wish the X7 came with that powertrain

Agree, and the XM isn’t right. On paper it sounds pretty cool, but nope. There was a black one on the showroom floor we looked over.

It’s getting broken in! And “I can’t drive 55” is suck in my head.

Peter was kind enough to jailbreak the limiter in my car. I have verified it. Bwahahahahaha!

Another good and comfortable trip east. Good not to have snow to deal with, but it was chilly, windy for two days, then some mist, light rain, and fog over the mountains of WV and MD.

Each morning the trunk wouldn’t latch. Damn thing. 50F and 40F… about 15 min fiddling with it each time plus colorful language before it finally closed. Once I get it cleaned up it’s going to the dealer for a new latch. See if the Fidelity warranty covers it.

And after living with our new X5 and its touch screen the MB Command control things are so old and aggravating. And BMW’s Assist Plus is really nice. The Driving aids in the S work fine and I use them all the time. I love the S but I may look at a new gas 7. No plans to switch but BMW has nice tech, interface, and good seats. The exterior is the weak point on the 7.

Some pictures…

The S is still overall a great vehicle though.

No doubt! It’s an amazing cross country car. So quiet and comfortable.

On most roads it’s incredible, smooth, quiet, and it just eats up miles. And some road surfaces are so weird the noise is ridiculous. Can’t imagine how loud it must be in other cars. It’s still rattle and squeak free yet time will tell after back and forth across Indiana… some terrible roads.

I heard three hits on the windshield during the trip. One is noticeable, the other two not so much. It’s treated with C-Bond NanoShield so hope that helps it from cracking. I also got hit on the hood pretty good, 1/4” long ding down to the metal. Ouch. Damn rocks and trucks. I’ll ask the dealer if they have a paint ding guy to fix it.

Yikes, glad it is fine. It has to do with the angle of the windshield not just the height of the vehicle, for example, the G-wagen folks also had windshield crack issues despite being a higher vehicle. \https://mbworld.org/forums/g-class-w...ld-phobia.html

Oil change today as I was doing other work in the garage. It goes in tomorrow for a new trunk latch. Fidelity will cover it.

That new quarter turn oil drain plug pops out fast! First time doing it and a slight turn and it’s out. And lots of oil. Glad my catch thing was right there. I’m used to drain plugs with lots of thread before it comes out.

I changed the oil in the S after replacing a couple coolant hoses on the FF. Got lots done today. Then a nice drive with my wife.

Very nice! Good for you on the DIY, that is the right way to do it!
