I’ve owned both, so here is a summary of the main changes I recall (beside cosmetics and styling):
:
  1. S550 was replaced by the S560 which received a new engine (4.0-liter V8 twin-turbocharging engine ~463hp horsepower of torque. The pre-facelift S550 had 4.7-liter V8 engine that (according to other forum members) is less reliable and prone to oil leaks and other issues.
  2. The facelifted S-Class introduced a new 9-speed automatic transmission “9G” (but also strictly available in the 2017 for the pre-facelift(, replacing the 7-speed transmission “7G” found in the pre-faceliftmodel from 2014 to 2016. The new transmission is just awesome in-town with much better efficiency and smoother gear shifts. No more jerky up/down shifting like what many of us have reported for the 7G transmission
  3. Technology and Infotainment: The facelift has a new COMAND system with larger active screen area, ~12.3”, and high-resolution display (also noticed much better contrast).
  4. Facelift has and introduced touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel. Some don’t like them, but they are redundant to the mouse/touch pad in the central console, as you can control the right screen from the steering, which wasn’t an option in pre-facelift.
  5. Biggest update IMO: facelift has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
  6. Driver Assistance Systems: I found the facelift to have a much better and enhanced driver assistance system. The Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Steering Assist works better, and they also added the Active Lane Change Assist.. The facelif, just like pre-facelift, also has adaptive cruise control system, but I found them to be equally good in both models. The most noticeable update was the lane keeping assist.
  7. Facelift has the new Energizing Comfort Control, which I rarely ever used as it’s gimmicky, but I still use the massage function which I found to be better in the facelift.

A few more:

Facelift did away with a CD changer. A single disc player in the glovebox was offered as an option.

Facelift new V8 includes cylinder deactivation for better gas mileage (but IIRC the EPA estimate only improved by 1 mpg or so). Some on here say this feature on 4MATIC cars can cause low speed vibrations

Yes, that was me : ). And.. yes, when I was shopping for S560, I drover no less than 2-3 dozens of S560s, most of them were 4-Matic. Almost every single one of them had that harmonic type of vibration with the 4-cylinder deactivation kicks in. You have to be an OCD vibration type of a car guy to feel it. I bet the average person would not notice it at all. I spoke to two MBenz service managers, and both confirmed it’s normal and how it is designed, but that’s really bad. Solution: I coded that feature off. I posted about it in a separate thread. It does not bother me anymore nor that it had impacted by mileage at all. However, before very long highway trips, I re-activate the 4-cylinder deactivation feature and I get nearly 28 MPG or so. Not sure how much it would be without it, probably still above 26 MPG. Point is, it’s hard to feel it on highway at high speed, but if you are on OCD type of a person to feel it, you can notice it on low speeds.

Added comments: My S560 is a 2018 in Emerald Green metallic >29,000 miles. Non 4-matic, but MBC, I have never heard of or used a cylinder de-activation mode. Do not use any driver assist options except cruise control with auto slow down setting at maximum distance. At one time, I pressed the A button to turn off the idle, but it's a nuisance to remember it. Driving from home along the Ohio River in rolling countryside some 65 - 75 one way trips to Cincinnati, I'll always get 27+ MPG indicated. On flatter land, cruising at 60 mph I have gotten 35 mpg.

One feature that was important to me on the facelift was the rear entertainment uses an HDMI input. For me, that was a massive win. I just put in a Google Play dongle and use my phone as a hotspot. My daughter is very very happy. Having a happy toddler on any extended road trip is worth everything. 😃
I’ve only been on this forum for a few weeks, but can tell you, it is an incredible place to come for knowledge and good people. Welcome!

That is marvelous for you and your family…

It’s a perfect example of differing wants and needs.

Due to my very poor hearing, I never turn on my radio.
