Well the OP has a 222, not a 223 so that’s one thing.

Getting back to OPs original topic, I’m adding the Audi RS6 to my list. I’ve been admiring it from afar. Time for a test drive if I can get my hands on one. Apparently comfortable (unlike the E63 AMG which is harsh) and a riot to drive.

Can't go wrong with a performance wagon! Please let us know your impressions.

15 mpg city, 22 highway is something else for a modern wagon. A RAM 1500 with a Hemi V8 does better!

You know it's not going to stop you for much longer than it takes to say "whatever" in your inner monologue.

We extensively test drove a GLS450 today, I gotta say it is a compelling option for S Class owners who want an SUV. Not quite as nice riding as the S, and certainly not as quiet on the road (although the one I drove did not have the acoustic package) but pretty damn close...

The GLS certainly does ride and drive well, especially for its class, but definitely not the same feeling for me. I find the EQS SUV is a bit closer, but I still think the Range Rover is as close to an S-Class SUV.

Which is ironic but it is what it is, Mercedes' own S-Class SUV (their words) gets outclassed by a competitor. Hopefully the next GLS is the true S-Class of SUV.

Its not the same for sure, but I was surprised how close and solid it felt.

I think the issue is "The S Class of". The GLS is much cheaper than the S Class, and when you consider its a huge SUV with components and size that require more raw materials, it makes no sense to expect it to feel like a peer to the S Class. If it did, then we all wasted a ton of money on the S Class lol. The GLS with options (not many) I spec'ed came to $92,000...thats still $23,000 less than the starting price of an S500.

The GLS does have some wins over the RR, watch this comparison were surprisingly the GLS won in nearly every way

I see, and I mean physics come to play but for Mercedes to call this generation GLS the S-Class of SUV is a very strong statement and I just find it ironic that a competitor which also does SUVs is able out S-Class Mercedes' own "S-Class of SUVs"

Thanks for the video while I watch it, your video reminded me of this video:
So apparently the X7 is better than the RR now?

Cullinan is what MB aspires, and fails, to achieve in luxury SUVs. GLS and EQS SUV don’t even achieve Bentayga levels of appointments.

It depends on what you want. Nothing makes the statement of the Range Rover, its the most prestigious of the group. Nothing has that heritage and that capability, but other cars are likely somewhat better in more practical ways.

I havent driven the new RR, but from an interior solidity standpoint the GLS was way better than the previous model RR.

I would buy a RR for myself to replace the S Class before I bought a GLS, but for a family vehicle I would choose the GLS.

Nor should they...the GLS I drove was $92,000. Its MUCH cheaper than a Range Rover and certainly a Bentayga. We loved the vehicle

I get that you hate most modern MB’s but c’mon. These aren’t even the same class of car, and MB doesn’t desire to make an $80k GLS or $100k EQS feel anywhere close to that of the $350k (starting) Cullinan.

There is also nothing about the design of any MB vehicle that would make you think they are trying to design a vehicle that aspires to a Rolls Royce...even the Maybach models dont have a RR look or feel.

I understand but given how S-Class is a Mercedes model, but for Range Rover to out S-Class an S-Class doesn't play well for me. Perhaps they left the true "S-Class of SUVs" for the Maybach GLS or maybe the EQS SUV or Maybach EQS SUV?

Thats just it...the GLS is NOT the S Class. Its not "an S Class", the only S Class is an S Class. The GLS is just their nicest SUV, you shouldnt compare it to the S Class at all.

I see. alright. MB marketing the GLS as "the S-Class of SUVs" is just that, marketing.

I don’t know that I have ever heard MB market it that way. Magazines and reviews have certainly said that.

Remember the GLS used to just be the GL, MB chose to change the naming structure so that “GL” meant SUV, and the letter at the end denoted the size relative to the sedan lineup (C, E or S).

It’s like the EQS sedan, it’s nowhere near as nice as an S Class inside, but when you realize it’s not supposed to be “the S Class” that becomes less surprising. CLS was never an S Class…
