I have a 17 S63 Sedan and looking to get some exhaust work done. I know I can get real performance exhaust for $4k+, but im only into it for the sound at the moment. Just want a deeper sounds for now.
Any one have experience removing Resonator or Cat on S63 exhaust? Should I even touch it? Im not going to touch the muffle, thats for sure.
Im sure there might be some back pressure lost, but its okay. I don't mind losing some hp, got plenty more!!!
There are plenty of W212 AMG E63s AWD guys doing it. You and I ( 2017 ) have the same M157 and transmission as them if all your after is better exhaust sound. Good luck.
Update: I did the res delete. Sounds amazing!! Just enough loudness, nothing crazy in comfort. But when in sport.... Its a monster.
New pipes still need to break in. The guy told me 2 weeks before it settles in. Should get a bit louder and deeper.
No drone what so ever. The best part is, the exhaust pops and bangs more on higher rpm downshifts and tapping the throttle at mid- high rpm. Not like a ecu with burble tune. But just enough where its a noticeable difference and I love it.
I not doing anything else to the exhaust as this is all I needed. I have pics of the exhaust before and after in case anyone needs a reference.
Just do the resonator and see how you like it. If you need more, then I would add down pipes before doing any hacking on the oem front pipes. Always good to keep those for trade in or resale.

I have a ‘15 S63 sedan and did the resonator delete. Made absolutely ZERO difference for me.
I was thinking of doing bolt on catless downpipes but they’re too expensive. Plus you need to get a tune or else the CEL light will be on all the time.
I have never done a muffler delete but today, I took my car to the local muffler shop to get it done.
I will write about it once I get the car back and get a few minutes.

just deleted both mufflers. Sounds very nice IMO. Sounds raw and hear The turbos better. My only complaint is some vibration inside the car at WOT.

Hey, thanks for the insights. Yea i figured muffler deletes would make a lot of drone... Did they cut the mufflers before the electronic actuators? Its mechanism/flaps where if you put it in sport mode, exhaust exits open up more and sounds louder, in case you didn't know.

Yes I’m aware of the actuators but they cut it all off. I would always put it in sport mode anyways and the flaps were always open so didn’t make a difference. There is a little drone but I don’t mind at all.

Looks like resonator delete is what I will be doing on my new S63 cabrio (which I get to enjoy the sound even more, The question is what about X-pipe? Would it mellow out the sound too much or make it sound better?
x-pipe on my old 5.5L sounded amazing but now sure how putting in on a 5.5L 4-valve would work (sounds amazing on the old 3-valve M113. Anyone tried X-pipes too?

There is an H Pipe in the S63 exhaust which joins the left and right exhaust pipes right behind the transmission pan (see photos in precedeing posts of underbody of S63). The H pipe is similar to an X pipe where the exhaust streams and pressures from the left and right banks of the V8 engine meet and equalize in pressure which I believe is important so that neither left or right engine bank is working harder to overcome a different exhaust back pressure. I dont know if any sound will be gained in replacing this H pipe with an X pipe, and it may not be worth the trouble.
I did straight pipe the mufflers on my 2012 CLS550 which gave it a lot more aggressive sound. I left the resonators in place as they take out drone. I also left the X pipe on the CLS untouched
"The two biggest differences between an X- and an H-pipe are sound and power. Generally, the X-pipe will deliver a more high-pitched exhaust note, making a car sound more exotic, whereas an H-pipe gives a deeper tone with more of a traditional hot rod sound," says George Rumore of Stainless Works. "X-pipe: Mid-pipes built with a crossover, or "X" shaped design, purposely cross exhaust streams to even out flow and streamline exhaust gasses through the rest of the system. X-pipes are generally raspier and louder than H or Y-pipes and have been shown to provide slightly more power than their counterparts. You are likely to see most of the power gains higher in the rpm band with an X-pipe.
H-Pipe: An H-pipe is better at balancing sound and produces a more consistent, classic muscle car growl. It does less than an X-pipe in the way of balancing exhaust gasses but still flows quite well. H-pipes maintain the back-pressure necessary for torque gains earlier in the rpm band, as opposed to the top-end power seen from an X-pipe."

Were you able to get any sound clips of this? Only a few on YT.
This is a 2016 S63 4matic sedan. Many mods, however, the exhaust consists of Redstar cat less down pipes, Renntech sport mufflers with electronic valves. I have done all work myself. I feel the car is not too loud and not to quiet. Runs very strong.

Is it me or the exhaust/setup sounds quiet? All I’ve done to mine was a resonator delete and fully opened up the exhaust flaps with a module and it sounds so much louder?
