I must be living under a rock! This is the first I've heard of this. CR can you comment on this?

The letter above was mailed out recently to MB owners.

There was a TSB (technical service bulletin) issued by MB related to this issue back in 2015 - LI01.30-P-061835 (see attachment)
It seems to be more prevalent in the more abused SUV M278 installations.

The going theory is perhaps ethanol, or machine tool programming/tooling induced tolerance error causing valve (guide) issues. Hard to know what the true culprit is, though I’m sure Mercedes has a better idea of the actual failure rate and underlying cause.

The purpose of posting this is if in the off chance it does happen to someone, at least they know it’s covered.

But I see plenty of M278’s with 150k mi. or more. So I probably wouldn’t worry too much.
Here’s an SL M278 with 148k

Or this S class M278 with almost 200k.

I got this in the mail today and it took me by surprise. How big an issue is this? I can't recall it ever being discussed on this forum and we tend to obsess over everything. CR, love to hear your take on this.

Whoops....I see you've already done it. My apologies and continued thanks for all you do for the group.

If the exhaust valve fails it will cost an CEL and reduced power.... so depending on how much you value having power.
