Impressions 2022 SL AMG 63

This may be a continuing thread from a novice SL owner. I was fortunate to receive a call from my salesperson two weeks ago about an ordered car from a VIP, who opted not to proceed with his order. When asked if I would consider his build at MSRP, I immediately said yes. Today the car was delivered to the dealership from the Mercedes Brunswick Georgia Preparation Center.

Hard to believe, but theses are unusual times, this SL is a 2022, although today is November 19. Normally, I would have waited for a 2023, and not have accepted a year old car. To my knowledge, the 2023 have no changes, have not been delivered, and have not been priced, although I anticipate at least a 5% increase.

My initial ride home, top up, on non freeway roads was a surprisingly pleasant and quiet experience, with more comfort than I anticipated. I varied the speeds, and played around with the settings during my 30 mile get acquainted ride. I even utilized the active adapted cruise control and tested the automatic braking. This car is a technological wonder!

I was hoping to avoid any paint chips from stones and road debris until my clear bra paint protection is completed.

I will share future updates on my SL journey.

Bruce

Gorgeous car! When you say you tested the automatic braking, are you saying you purposely didn't brake and let the car brake by itself??

my new SL 63 definitely breaks by itself in traffic. It is part of the intelligent cruise control.

So actually today was my first day of driving after my clear bra paint protection. By automatic braking, I was referring to active cruise control and letting the technology control the car without using the accelerator and braking. Pretty impressive. Last drive was around 18 mpg. Not certain whether good or bad. Still easily breaking in the car, and avoiding sudden stops, and over acceleration. The technology is amazing. The car acknowledges me with my fingerprint. It also tells me to remove my phone from the charging area. Very cool! More to follow.

By the way, the car receives a lot of stares and compliments!

Car is beautiful Bruce! If I lived in FL (and had a garage) I'd leave the top down always! What paint color is that?

Congrats on that pretty tasteful new vehicle Bruce--My 22 SL63 was delivered to the dealer in August and registered in my name just before the Sept1 new Canadian luxury tax (10% or 20% beyond $100k -whichever the lesser-ouch!)

Regrettably the vehicle could not be delivered til mid Nov because assembly/calibrations were not complete so finally I got to take delivery with necessary snow tires. Was due to arrive last April!-at least I saved the luxury tax on this one.

Coming to Fla for 2 mos in Feb so having it valet hauled to Cape Coral.

Having had a recent GTC,GT Pro+ as well as a number of previous SL63's, I too am amazed at how this car sounds ,handles-the new augmented reality is amazing.

Still breaking it in on the no-snow days--have noticed just this past week that there appears to be no AM radio, which I usually go to only for road reports. Have sent an email and am waiting a reply . The sound from the back end I find to be stronger/superior to even the Pro+.

Far more refined imho than my prev GTs'. So far better in every way to me.

Can't wait for Florida in Feb to get the top down-Plan on driving it back to Canada thro the mountains come April.

Do enjoy yours.

Better put the top up regularly also, it is better for the roof fabric, etc. Leave it down always, will leave ugly traces on the roof material I am afraid.

Aggravation, de jour:

Has any one experienced the lower left button, only 1/2 illuminated. Among other settings’, the spoiler is controlled by the top half. I took it in to my dealer, waited 2.5 hours and eventually received a loaner car. Apparently multiple computer updates to correct. Very strang to receive delivery 300 miles ago, and not have the latest software upgrades. Quite disappointed.

Would love to see photos of your color combination as it’s one that I’m considering.

This is a similar car to mine. Click the link to view the color combination, or do your own computer search.

Beautiful car, and I enjoy your updates. It’s definitely a car on my list in the next year or two…

seeing that picture up close of the steering wheel, though, I just can’t get over that in a flagship model with a sky high price increase that they didn’t cover that airbag Center in leather but rather cheapo plastic, what a miss on Mercedes’ part! Would have costed them $3 in extra leather parts and could have sold it for $5 more on the base price lol.

I’m always baffled by how they decide what cars get stitched wheels. The G and SL don’t get it, but GLE 53/63 and GLS63’s do. Makes no sense.

Yes, how wonderful to have to consider the fabric top. No matter what one does, “rag” tops will deteriorate significantly quicker than most anything else on the car. They get creases in them, they start to fray at the edges, they discolor, they start to leak—first air, then water—and then, you get to replace them, in which case they will probably squeak, rattle and won’t seal as nicely as the original. Rag tops are a pain in the ***. Too bad MB cheaped out and dumped the gorgeous, utterly practical and iconic retractable hardtop.

Oh well, all is not lost. Perhaps MB or some aftermarket supplier will come up with a “removable” hardtop and R232 owners can put a hoist in their garages to lift it off. Talk about going bassackwards!

That's your opinion, the hardtop made the SL horribly awkward looking over the last 20 years in my opinion, not to mention, like a soft top, can easily be prone to leaks and failures just as well.
