SL65 Larger Heat Exchanger

So while looking at what options we could do for the intake I was curious about double stacking the current upgraded heat exchanger the SL65 uses (26 inches Long, 2 inches thick and 5 inches tall I think I have to double check the height) which is an estimated 250 cubic inches.

Well there was a heat exchanger that was a bit bigger by 4 inches long, 1 inch thicker and 1 inch taller. which is 560 cubic inches more then double if using 2 of the previous ones made for our model. Had to move hoses around and do a lil surgery but it fits and the bumper closes up no problem

I attached the pic below. Next up is quad top mount intercoolers then a trunk tank.

Key thing to remember on HE's is don't go crazy on biggers better, not the case.. You want it to cool hot water as much as possible right? So keep the THICKNESS to minimum IE you want air to cool it as much as possible go 2" maximum, forget the 3" krap it'll be a fat brick of hot water, you will just be going backwards etc.. Good luck..

I Think 3 inch thick is as far as I'd go. It's nice that its 4 inches wider and 1 inch taller. The problem I had with the other 2 HEs I had from other vendors is the first one the seems on the wield caused a massive leak. The second one something inside cause coolant to soak the whole HE. Lets see what this new one from Eurocharged does.

haters crazy
Isn't that the Eurocharged E55 heat exchanger? You need to get out of this more/bigger is better mindset. I still dont understand why you need 4 intercoolers. 1 or 2 good ones is plenty

I agree about not having an HE that's too thick. Look what was behind my ABC cooler when I removed it last year:

Its only about 20mm thick, but even then its pretty obvious that not much air goes through it.

Gonna have to look for a vendor then to build a custom 29x6x2.5 HE is prob the best bet. But seeing how my last 2 SL65 HEs from two different vendors both broke within 6 month so that is literally a HE every 3 months (one with the seem of the weld came undone and the second a part inside must of broke and soaked the whole HE in coolant)

When the HE is too thick, the air will move around the cooler and not through it. Not a good way to cool the water down.

I am also not a fan of the Quad-Intercooler System. You should keep in mind the pressure drop in such a system, which is not a good thing powerwise.

Good luck with your build!

Could you explain that a bit? I would have thought a quad cooler system would reduce the pressure drop?

Double Stock Coolers is what Renntech sells. Poor results...

Read the looong post by Welwynnick about V12 inter-cooling on the Mercedes M275 site... VERY Informative!

First I tried using two stock SL65 coolers, the same kit Renntech sells... (for around $4K. ) Before I dropped $4k I did some research.

Check part numbers like I did and you will find that the stock SL65 condenser is nothing more then a $135 heater core from a 1980s S Slass sedan...

The Renntech system is just another $135 heater core added with some custom hoses and nice brackets. I bought their brackets and hoses $260... Installation was very clean and simple. But $4K for the complete kit???

The final result was it took a little bit longer to heat soak, but heat soak it still did PLUS it took longer to cool down...

The recent hot ticket some recommend is the $189 condenser from a S600. It is inly about 3/4 inch thick but is around 11x22 so it has a lot more surface area and air moves easily through it. The installation was simple but bleeding the system takes FOREVER!! I also have the Speedriven larger IC pump.

The final results were overall much better... The car still heat soaks but after much more time and it cools down pretty fast.

The bottom line is that the best systems are probably the Speedriven (4) condenser set up with two larger ICs. But that requires minor modifications under the hood.

Hello Nick,

my Tuner tried several different set-ups, and the 4 Cooler-System was not the best. I think it is not so effective because of the additional plumbing, splitting and too much turbulences of routing the air. Two bigger coolers with a good core bring good results.

CL55 AMG
Hey Guys
CL55 Owner here just looking around, so, excuse my ignorance on the subject as it relates to SL's. But, have you ever looked into a Killer Chiller or similar system? I've heard of guys running these on CL's. I know a guy who has one on his CTS-V. It's pretty much eliminated heat soak on the Caddy
