Usually the last model year is the best as they usually have all (or at least most) of the bugs worked out. The later model years definitely looked better as they had a facelift. You would also have to take into account the Chrysler merger so I would imagine the year made just before that would be the best.

I would imagine the 2000-2001 is the best taking into account all the info above.

2001 is the rarest year for these cars. They only made 659 of them then.

I think 2000, 2001 and 2002 are about the same. Since W210 came out in 96. Of course, 2002 will be the most reliable since its the last year.

No, I don't think it will be the most reliable since it had more electronics than the 99. The 99 is probably the most reliable since it is the least complicated. From my experience, the MB with the most electronics is always the least reliable. Lots more to break on the 2002 than the 1999.

I find the shiftronic to be a nice touch, as are the updates to the dash (less prone to crack) and exterior aesthetics on the 2000+ models.

There is some rumor that the 2002 models and perhaps some of the 2001 models were not handmade, but I don't know of any solid verification of this.

2001 for me . But 99 to 02 were the last German made AMGs. In 2003 they were being made by Chrysler. IMO I rather have a Real German made car from the mother land. Getting close to selling my E55 guys - Please check my post out if anyone is still interested..

+1 my 2000 seems barbaric that I have to hold the button. Feel like an overfriendly goof in my car every time I want to open the sunroof.
