Look at Gustav backpedaling allllllll over the place. Over here you would think the M5 parted the red sea and made the blind see.

From that post.

Correct, thanks to 4WD launch the Porsche has an advantage. And yes, on tracks it is also faster. After all the M5has physical fundamentals agaisnt it: high center of gravity, mass etc.
Sure seems different than "watch the M5 beat a tricked out SL55 putting out near 550hp"

Drives Slowly
That is a good thread. This was the best quote:

DerekDSU- ..................It's not a put down to the M, just a fact as I see it. Just like saying the M5 is completely dominant on the curves and high end pulls is not a put down to a 4 year old E style. I'd love nothing more than to have the M5 pull on the low end like the E so I could eat folks up in 2nd-3rd gear, but it doesn't do it. I'd love to have the E corner & handle like the M and then I wouldn't need both of them.

I had one on order for 2.5yrs and backed out when I started hearing rumours about engine problems, SMG issues, etc (early on in the testing)... I knew the low torque rating and high revving motor would make for a boring ride. Sure its fun on a racetrack where you can go full out, but on the street I want a torque-monster.

Man am I glad I never took delivery of one. Alot of people had to pay $5K - $10K over MSRP to have one. I would bet they wouldn't be too happy...

If you read the impressions of the new M5 owners, "disappointed" is one of the last words that come to mind. You also will find that, while many M5 owners (myself included) find 1/4-mile times interesting, they are one of the less relevant aspects of our purchase decisions or level of enjoyment. In any case, we have yet to see a significant sample of 1/4-mile times run in properly broken in M5s. So, even if the 1/4-mile time is your benchmark, you should reserve judgment. I do not expect the M5's 1/4-mile time to be significantly better than the E55's. I also do not care much if it is worse, since that is not what the M5's purpose is and I have no intention of using it at the drag strip. I care much more about how the M5 feels, how quick it is in situations that I encounter daily, and how well it serves its true purpose of being a supremely comfortable sedan that transforms into a sports car with first-rate handling. And in those departments, the M5 does not disappoint.

I am not disappointed at all. The seats, for me, are more comfortable than the E55's. The suspension on the comfort setting is somewhat harder, but that is exactly what I expected, and it is plently comfortable for every day driving. The difference that the M5's three suspension settings makes is impressive. If someone's foremost priority is a soft ride, the M5 certainly is not the right choice.

Not until it comes out of his mouth. He already said on the M5 boards that the M5 is a great car, and is more capable than the E on a road course.

Yep, that's me. Having been on the M5 waiting list for two years, months before I bought the E, I couldn't pass up on the car.

It is truly an amazing car in the areas in which it is built to compete. I DOMINATED every porsche in the solo run group this weekend minus 1. Not only did I eat them alive in the straights, but I caught them in the curves. That is truly unheard of for a 4,100lb family car. It is no different or less amazing than our E besting Cobras and ZO6's on the dragstrip. I took an instructor for the ride on the last day who raved about the new Maserati sedan UNTIL our ride was completed. His quote was, "that car is amazing out there. It kills the Maserati."

I think the M5 is a 12.6 car in the quarter mile with proper driving, something I have not accomplished yet. I also think it's probably the most versatile car I've ever driven. Carry your clients or family around town and to meetings, run a sub 13 second quarter mile, and run with and pass sportscars all day long on the track.

Soooo, why am I selling it. One word- Noble. I don't need a versatile car that can run on the track because I have a Noble that will destroy the M5 and nearly any other street legal car in the world. IMO, the E is more comfortable and more luxurious. And most importantly, my wife likes the E because it is "smoother" to drive.

With all that love for the M5, let me clarify it's most serious shortfalling in my opinion- no low end torque. You can have a ball in the E from 0-45 and never brake the speed limit. In the M5, you need some great curves or you have to wind out 2nd gear. Make the E handle like the M or give the M some low end testocerone plus a nip & tuck here and there, and you've got the perfect car. But watch out for the Noble!

Thanks Derek...

If ONLY all new m5 owners were as noble as you. You have both and have learned to appreciate what you had on the E55.

The M5 is more technologically advanced, but in real word freeway driving and street stop lights, it will not fare well against a stock E55.

Just imagine when we get a E63 with 7spd... The Kings CLS/E55 will have the straight line performance once again. Right now, as you know very well know, the M5 really is incredible at 125mph and above. All attributed to great gearing.

I think once MB provides a proper 7 spd, the 6.2L with its equal HP and close to 90lbsTQ advantage will again dominate from 0 to 155mph.

E55 is my next car purchase for the comfort and space for the family. Do I care if an M5 can pull hard at 125mph? No, cuz I would never myself or my family in that type of danger just to prove a point.

I will rather settle it on the drag strip. But according to some M5 owners, 1/4 is not that important. Ironically something that all Magazines really make a point to sell and NHRA creates their business.

Derek enjoy your M5 and your E55. You truly are blessed to have both!

When it comes to straightline get the amg if you wanna play racetrack get a porsche~ who needs a half half sorta thing like bmw thats trash.

Honestly speaking how often do you actually get to race on the street or go on corners driving normally everyday? especially in LA unless yours somewhere on the hills!

poor renntech i know how you feel. i knew this would happen to that car. having grow up around M3's all my life from the E30 to the E46 M3 the M cars lack drivability and usability on the street. M cars are ment for the track as noted above. one thing i always hated with the M3 was you get some guy in a Pickup come next to you and try and race you and if you aint in the right gear (last 3,500 or so rpm) he would just pull away until you hit speeds that would send you to jail. Thats why may favorite car today is still the Viper you can skip gears and still pull like no other and it has an exotic car feel that you dont get with the corvette.

Poor Derek, now the M5 guys are questioning whether he knows how to use launch control and are bashing him for "mistreating" his car before offering it for sale.

There is a small group of rather self reightous folks on that board that tend to get me a bit more defensive than I should be. Most of them are fine but in general, this is a much more laid back board.

I value your opinion because you are indeed unbiased as I have read your posts here since day one and at other sites too. Good luck with the Noble and today I took some extra appreciation when I mashed the throttle to get to 45 mph faster than anybody else :p

Oh, does this mean that the E55 will come out of retirement to go for a 10.50 pass?
