Brake Job on a 2004 E55.

Any advise on doing a brake job on the beast? The service manager at the dealership said not to try it, too difficult of a job. I've always enjoyed working on my own cars so I thought I'd ask around. Any special tools/electronics needed for the 8 piston calipers?

Any advise is much appreciated.

Haven't done it myself, but its a brembo caliper, and does have a pad mounted sensor. I doubt it would give you much trouble.

The service manager mentioned the pads are under tremendeous pressure, over 2000 psi. I've done brake jobs before, but never encountered a caliper under pressure while disassembling. Any thoughts on what that might be all about?

Your car has SBC. Electronic brakes. It MUST be disabled before doing any brake work.

Would you happen to know how to disable the SBC? If not, do you know of any repair manuals or websites I can use for this.

I heard of a mechanic at a Midas shop that had their hand nearly cut-off while attemping to change the pads on a Mercedes with SBC , imo i would take it to the dealer..

things with and without wheels
Set up your car to be ready for the brake job, then remove the key form the ignition and put it in your pocket then open the hood and disconnect the module by unplugging it- now you are ready to do it safely without any lose of fingers. If you want a more detaled steps do a search.

Forgot about the SBC. If the pads were under pressure they'd be squeezing all the time, that doesn't make sense.

If you want to perform a brake job on your car that has SBC you have to either disconnect the battery or pull the plug from the SBC unit. The SBC system must be depressurized and this is how its done.

Before I go ahead and loose a few digits to the brakes, anything else you can think different from a normal break job? Do I need a special tool to reset the 8 pistons?

Today, I had a complete brake job including four new EVO rotors and new, front aftermarket pads. This was a 4+hr job, completed by a certified MB master mechanic. If you are not a skilled automotive mechanic, I suggest you find one to do this work on your $90,000.00 car.

Good Lord...after reading that sheet there is NO WAY I would mess with the brakes....pretty humbling to see that after 35 years of doing stuff yourself...technology has passed you by and a simple brake pad replacement becomes something this technical and actually dangerous !!...

Congrats on the new goodies. Part of the enjoyment I get from owning this car is the appreciation of working on it and really understanding the internal workings. Besides, I'm not installing a shift kit, (been there, done that) it's just a brake job. What's the worst that can happen, I have to start typing one letter at a time because that's all the digitis I have left .
