I vote for the biggest size possible using bigger filters. Thats the only way to make a difference and get the most power.

Like mentioned earlier the filter size should be something we can all get our hands on.

What size filter does the renntech box use? Stock or bigger?

I havent looked in awhile but what about using tube straight to the intake and using a cone or mushroom filters by the grill? I dont know if there is enough space, just shooting ideas

Yup.. Its been decided that if we are gonna do this, its gonna be to get the most power possible and make them look good doing it.

As for the Renntech box, I have a feeling I am going to be sick when I get it.. I have this nagging suspicion that they use the stock lower airboxes and just provide a new upper CF piece to attach to them.. I hope to god I am wrong and $5,100 didnt buy me a top CF plate. I'll take alot of pics when it arrives.

My suspicion arrives now because I recently saw 2 closeup shots of the Renntech system and the bottom airboxes look completely stock.

Victor the one thing I can tell you is that renntech buys a lot of stock air boxes from local dealers in south Florida. If your hunch is correct which i believe it is then .

God.. Please dont let me be right.. Please... Before, when I thought they were providing a complete system for that kind of money I was a little shocked, now if all it is is that top plate, well.. I wont even post the words I am thinking of...

That would be the biggest scam of all times. A new airbox cover and T-tube for 4.5K?

Hope that you hunch is not right, Victor.

Don't trust everything that they claim...... If they say 15, I would bet it's worth about 8-10.

I would prefer to see a 3rd party independent before and after dyno, which Victor is going to do.

"Your Right" I just went outside and checked my 500E's RENNTech air cleaner... It's a CF raised lid graffed on to a stock airbox assembly...

Well, besides the look, what's the magic number that will do it for you?
Just going by K&N's claims will give 1-1/2 to 2 percent gains.

So, that means the Y-Tube piece alone produces the HP gain?

I'm not looking for a magic number. I just don't trust what most tuners claim the HP increase for their mods. Too much variation and lacks reproducibility. Besides, that is 3.5K you're spending. I could have used the money to get a Evosport ODPS and get a whole lot more HP

Victor,

I have a quick question. I read here before that moving the air intake for the supercharger to the lowest possible postion creates more hp.This being due to velocity of airflow. Is it possible to have the intake at the lower grill, or is that re-engineering the whole front end? Just want to take advantage of any possible hp gains. I know the Cobra has their intake where our fogs are! Please advise.....

That's exactly what I tried to do before.. Similar to what the M5 guys did.. They put the intakes into the grilles and run tubes up the car to the airbox. I dont think there is enough room in there to do that but I'll give it a second look.

I'm also interested in this, but feel if we could get a larger "mouth" where the present intakes begin (beside radiator- small elongated openings) and make them bigger-taking in more air directly behind the grille facia! At the same time - have the intake tubes a little larger to handle more air volume going into the airbox. I have to imagine this will help the Hp#'s if we can do it??
Thoughts anyone ??

The drivers side inlet for the snorkle tube is smaller and more restrivtive than the passager. I would think scooping more air would help. A dyno I did bypassing the snokel tubes themselves showed a 5 rwhp gain.

I agree! Larger intakes would increase airflow, and there does seem to be room for a larger port! The problem is that it is still coming into a smaller TB. It would seem that there would be no major effect w/o a larger TB! I am also an advocate for some type of swirl effect. I have read the other post regarding such, but feel that air moving in that fashion increases volume! Take for instance a 2 liter bottle. If you turn it upside down the liquid inside just gulps out. This is the exchange of liquid/air. However, if you spin the bottle creating a funnel effect the liquid comes out 10x as fast! Wouldn't this be similar in principle???????????????????

There is, but, because of the shape of the grille and the fact that it should be fastened against the grille so that no hot engine compartment air can enter, that would be difficult to do in the stock locations.

The idea I was playing with was to extend the 2 tubes from the airboxes down into the mesh grille area (either on each side of the car where the fog lights are or both in the center grille). This would allow the use of a big scoop or 2 ram funnels. I left the project in the middle because I got occupied with other things, but, maybe a quick revisit and some testing would be in order now that we are redesigning the intake boxes anyways.

As luck would have it, I know someone who can get you the parts to take care of that problem.. 80mm TB you say???

Yup.. It makes sense, but, alot of people say its B.S with respect to engine air flow... I'll leave it up to the pros to respond to this one.
