Custom made, Designed, Paddle shifter for E55.
I’m working with a friend who is a machinist. I would like some suggestion on how to design the paddles or post pictures of ones you like from other cars for me to consider and how big to make them. Please help and put in your two cents on the project. This will be made to be a straight bolt on replacement, no hacking.

Here's a link that was posted a couple weeks ago that should give you some additional insight. Good luck and when you get them made, be sure to post. I bet your buddy will find some takers (including me! )

As far as the 63 goes, I don’t know why anyone would want the paddle shifters. They are useless. The car does not shift when you hit the paddle. There is about a 600 rpm lag before the car shifts. Try using these things going from first to second gear. You have to shift at 6,000 rpm’s for it to shift at 6,600 or you hit the rev limiter. Don’t know why the rev limiter kicks in at 6,600 in 1’st but that’s reality. All the other gears go to 7,200…

Its the tranny thats slow not the paddle ...
I actually find my car shifts faster in Sport than in manual ... dunno why
Instead of re-engineering the whole thing - think you are better off starting with a set of E63 paddles and modfiying the housing / make a new housing to make it fit the E55 wheel.... the E63 paddles are sweet....!
Wierd kinda miss that E63 I had one test now ... paddles, motor sound, brakes (except the squeal) ... nice. Dont miss the tranny one bit though.

You guys are hilarious putting paddle shifters on a slow-*** 5 speed auto. Just get a Sprint Booster and smile, its a friggin SLUSHBOX boys, paddles won't add inches to your d!ck and will likely only decrease your performance as you fiddle trying to pre-empt the computer. Regardless of what you tell that tranny to do it will still do it on its own damn time. You can only make suggestions, not decisions, that's up to the computer. If you want paddles, get something with an SMG so you can put them to good use.

I only use the change down button in my car and let tranny decide when to upshift in soprt mode ... hit the limiter in first too many times now to try and manually upshift in manual mode also why is it so damn slow in man mode?

good point, maybe instead of paddles it would be better to modify the speed at which the semi-auto changes gear

The cars already come with button shifters mounted on the steering wheel. I use mine from time-to-time for a variety of reasons. Paddles would be slightly more convenient than the buttons, which is probably why MB switched the standard design. If h0an9 comes up with a decent piece, I can imagine a handful of people wanting to switch.

The padels are purely cosmetic ... they just "feel" better ... there are sport programes for our trannies available that aparently speed up the shifts and it comes in the perf studio option list.
Called AMG Speedshift Plus you have 2 manual programmes M1 & M2. €1400 from the factory....
Who knows how much better it is...

question.. I just recently noticed that my steering wheel buttons dont work in sport mode, only Manuel.. Is this right? My CLK55 allows mw to shift with the buttons in S, and M mode.. Also, is it possible for the E55's to get this Speedshift Plus program? I know Renntech makes a TCU, but have never seen one for the E55..

My only gripe with Cylinder Head is that it takes my finger three hits of the down key to get past his new sig..

I thought this was a very accurate assessment (also pretty funny). If you want to play with paddles that actually work when you tell them to............ get SMG!!!

Hm.. sounds like th eE63 paddles are what everyone wants. I was thinking maybe something larger or longer one like some of the ones for the M3 from aftermarket companies.
Example.
