Actually what's different about this picture?? Meaning anything strike you as odd??

Besides that it's an E63 with the top end ripped off due to a valve failure.

Answer: Check out the timing chain. Makes NO connection with the cams at all. In fact, entire valve train popped right off with timing chain and gear still in place.

To quote my mechanic, "There's a whole lotta voodoo going on in there" referring to valve timing etc...

I guess as an old time mechanic, just never had seen that before.

To me, it appears the top cam has failed due to lack of oil to the lobe or maybe component fatigue due to a faulty part batch... ??? Low oil level ???

That's pretty cool ... I was wondering what the advantages might be, off hand less chain weight, and more accurate timing (??). Could you see how they get the drive/gear unit in there?

The center section with chain and gear is the actuator for the variable valve timing. And that is not what is odd. Oil problem here that is what is odd.

I was going to say there is no oil on the upper bank but i figured the engine is just tilted and that's why all of the oil is on the bottom. I've never seen that about the timing chain making no connection. Very interesting.

Wow, I guess it is driven by that gear. Much easier to change cams! I wonder if the engine has and whining noise from the gear driven cams?

THe oil is damn dirty for a 63 also, how many miles??

Is this car in for the timing chain tensioner recall?? or was it really a valve failure?

The timing chain was my first thought and then I looked at it again and thought, "the chain is tight and straight ... must be something else."

That chain looks perfect except there's an uncovered sprocket next to it.

Just another observation...

Notice that the damage is localized to the right top inlet valve tappets. This would obviously rule out cam failure. The left hand tappets appear fine as well ruling out metal fatigue on these bits too.

So it appears to be loss of oil to the damaged regions. My 2 cents.

Had some requests for any other pics of the mighty E63 innards.

Only other 2 that I have...bucket tappets looked cool as hell BTW

On the cam thing....guess it was just cool that the chain stayed intact....chaulk me up one on the ownage scale I guess.

Correct Vanos. It could be that the picture was taken way after dis-assembly and the head has good drain back properties, hard to tell from the picture.
