VRP 80mm TB Install - 6/25/08

I just had Victor's 80 mm TB kit installed by Curt at CW Performance, my first impression is that I can tell there's more power during the mid-range of the rpm's but it did seem to hesitate a little at the start. It feels a little like turbo lag but no where as bad. Has anyone here installed just the TB and what hp gains did you get from it?

I also noticed when I hold it in first gear and easy the rpm's up until the SC engages it does it a lot smoother. Before it would shake/rock the car.......I'm not sure why the new TB would change that, from what I've read it takes a few miles for the car to adapt to it.

Over all I'm fairly impressed with the kit, I plan to dyno the car again, my stock dyno was 428 rwhp. I want to try and dyno it with temperature the same as is was during the stock dyno. I'll have to wait until October when it's a little cooler here. I plan to dyno each mod as I go, my next one will be the pulley/ECU and IC.

I have a friend looking to buy a 04-05 E55 before the end of July. Let me know if you know anyone that has one for sale. Thanks

I hope I get close to an additional 20 rwhp. Did you get a pulley also or just the tune?

don't expect that much. however, the hp you get is hp through the entire rpm band instead of peak hp so it's worth a lot in terms of performance.

E55BKS: Without software it will take a bit of driving for DME to retune itself for more arflow.

Find open road and do several WOT acceleration runs and that should be enough.

Typically we do 80 TB on Stage I cars (pulleys, software).

Thanks,

I have K3 car . VRP claim 20 or 25rhp on TB but I got old file on my ECU so Cory upgraded my ECU and hopefully I will get some more rhp.

Thanks Vadim, I have about 40 miles on the car since the install, but not many WOT runs.
My next mod will be the pulley/tune.

I do notice it pulls harder between 3000 & 6000 rpms. From 0-to 3000 seems the same.

Hey Brian!! Glad to see you are enjoying the new mods!! The TB is one mod that needs some adjustment time from ECU in order to show its full potential.

There are 2 ways I make this happen when I swap to the 80mm TB..

1) Clear all the adaptive settings with STAR or do the "Sneaky ECU Reset".

2) When the new TB is installed, before starting the car, turn the key to Position 2 but don't start the car. Leave it there for 90sec. You will hear the ECU cycling relays and activating different sensors on the car. One of the things it does during this procedure is the drive-by-wire reset. By doing this, when you drive the car for the first time, the car will run very smoothly and the extra power from the TB will be readily aparent.

If you dont do these procedures, each car will respond differently, but after you've put enough miles on it, the ECU will eventually learn and the smoothness will come.

Thanks Vic - One quick question. Will the Sprint Booster I have on the car work with this TB?

Also Curt should be calling you today, the gasket ring on the TB intake got sucked halfway in to my SC last night. Luckly the butterfly caught it, but it got cut in two places. Curt drove out to where I was and helped me get it back running. When it got hung up, the ESP shut down and I had zero throttle. Car runs ok now without it, but I sure it's sucking air around the Y pipe inlet. I drove it home slowly, luckly I was only a mile from my house.

Is this the small metal ring inside the intake tube?

I think he is talking about the black rubber washer that sits between the airbox (CF or OEM) and the TB. Years ago, I accidently lost mine on my OEM box when I removed it to add K&Ns. Luckily, I was playing around and noticed the leak and got a new seal at MB.

You are correct, what did you use to keep it in place?

I think Vadim swapped it out when he installed the 80mmTB, so dunno. I guess its time to go hang out at the shop some...
