E55 vs CLS 55 vs SL55 AMG's

Which of these three beasts would you say is the fastest of the three? Lets say that all three are bone stock, only mod is that they all have drag radials outback.

I would be interested in highway pulls and 1/4 mile pulls.

The lighter E55 wins the race. From a dig, from a roll, from expressway speeds.

The CLS feels superior anyway by virtue of its gorgeous interior and sleek exterior.

The SL drops its top and doesn't care what the other two think.

Something like that.

Your worst nightmare...
The E will take all of them eventhough the SL is rated at 493HP....the weight does not help it I think...

I would say the E or CLS, but 07 & 08 SL55's have a pulley and larger TB stock, which could narrow the gap slightly.

I would think the E has the weight to power advantage. Outside of that its in the driver's hands

I thought the CLS and E weigh the same, that is what edmunds says anyway. The CLS's values are plumeting if you look in the trader.

I never would have guessed the weights were similar but since they are, the E55 and CLS55 would be neck-and-neck with the SL55 a few steps behind.

Arnt SL55s under rated? I had 2004 SL55 (stock) and was racing M5s several times and I was able to pull on it even over 100mph. I would think that my SL55 would not lag behind a stock E55 given how it performed against a stock M5 especially given the fact that M5 shines over 100mph.
So I would not say that SL55 would loose out to CLS or E.

As fast and nice as the SL and CLS bodies are, the E is lighter.

As for the extra HP rating on the SL, dynos have proved that to be BS. Just marketing.

Well I'm also a happy SL55 owner but I'm quite confident a stock E55 is faster than a stock SL55.

The fastest known 1/4 mile time for a stock E55 is forum member Enzom's 11.775 seconds. For an SL55? 12.4 seconds. There are dozens of stock E55 times on http://www.dragtimes.com with 1/4 mile times faster than 12.4.

But no need to simply take my word for it. One of the fastest 1/4 mile tracks in the country is ATCO in New Jersey. You should head on over the next time the NY/NJ guys are planning an event there. It's a lot of fun and you can get some hard numbers on how fast your SL runs.

I am not disputing it by any means, I am just stating my personal observations against m5 (never ran against e55). Unfortunately, I no longer have SL55 , traded it in for e63 a year ago.

maybe so, but the cls drag coefficent is higher then E's. More drag=slower times

I've owned all three, the E55 is the fastest. I've done at least 20 head to head with the SL55 and never lost no matter who was driving the E55. I think the CLS with 19" just doesn't launch as hard.

So how much does every 100 pounds slow you down?

S55 4300
E55 4100

Every 100 lbs lost equates to a tenth of a second.

Hey jmf003, whats your procedure when launching your SL55 at the track? I turned the esc off today and nailed it and got about 80 ft of rubber, exclamation in the dash was flashing on and off and it felt like it stopped spinning for a second but when i went back to the spot there was no break in the marks to my surprise. Then i punched it with it on and the car fell flat on its face then proceeded to rip out of the hole.

Sure. Someone else (Chiromikey, maybe?) figured out the technique and I just borrowed it.
  • ESP off
  • Short, dry burnout (no need to heat street tires, just clean them)
  • Stage
  • Left foot on brake, right foot off accelerator
  • Release the brake and simultaneously roll into the accelerator
  • Take about 1 second (slightly more or less depending on track prep) to reach wide open throttle
There are a handful of guys running 1.6x 60' times using the technique.

The most recent Atco track day was organized here: https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...1-25-10am.html. Not sure when those folks will organize the next one.

The next East Coast organized track day is at Maryland International: https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...-1-09-a-2.html. A bit farther away from Long Island but great folks and another fast track.

jmf003, With all that power and hooking up well, has it had any detrimental effects on the rigidity of the body. My GN hooks really hard and the car started to develop a dimple over the quarter glass (before roll cage). Have you noticed more creeks and rattles in your car due to more power and launching at the track?

I miss going to the Hampton's LI to run, wasn't a half bad track and there was always a party afterwards. Atco's a very fast track, always ran a few tenths faster than Etown.

Hi, Kustom. No issues so far. I'm no mechanical engineer but I believe MB uses more structural steel on our cars than is the norm, which leads to both higher rigidity and greater weight.

Something that might be worth keeping an eye on are the bolts that attach the rear end to frame. Forum member Skeeter encountered this problem with his car. Although the cause was never pinned down Mercedes blamed his engine mods for essentially producing more torque than the car was designed to handle. Thread here: https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...ch-pulley.html
