Anyone have the head off an E55
Trying to solve a spark plug issue, If someone has a head off could you check and see what plug was in it, and how far in the hole it sits. a few pics would be great.

MBWorld Fanatic!
There might be some pics in one of these threads. I don't feel like digging thru them right now.

That is amazing, Thank you, this will really solve a scooby doo mystery. So the factory uses a 1 inch reach plug, every major manufacture says 3/4 reach. So either the plug sticks a 1/4 inch to far in the head or a 1/4 inch in the hole. we will see tomorrow.

Tough to see, but visible...looks like we need a 7/8" reach..

Why all the drama over the extension of the plug into the cylinder head? Just use the correct plug (pictured above) and all is as the engineers at MB specified. There's no mystery here to be solved.

My replacement dealer spec plugs were about 1/4" shorter...sneakyneon pointed out that threads can create hotspots, etc...and I'd like to make sure I'm running the right setup.

Um drama? If you don't want to contribute to the thread why waste your energy and out time? 4 major spark plug companys show 3/4 reach plugs as a replacment, wile MB says 1.06. whats it going to hurt to see a pic of a plug in head? I have a 3/4 reach plug in the car now and it runs fine, if it was recessed 1/4 into the sparkplug hole the car would misfire and run poorly, If a 1.06 plug sticks into the combustion chamber it will cause detonation and carbon build up on the threads.

Who gives a flip about a picture of the tip of a spark plug portruding into a head's combustion chamber? I've already contributed more useful information to this thread than should have been necessary.
If you look at the correct technical information at the various spark plug manufacturers' websites, they all give the same results and show the proper thread length at approximately 25.6 mm, or just over an inch.
I and others have tried to help you by providing you with the correct part number information (and even some pictures of the factory plug, too) since you apparently went to the parts store without knowing what to purchase.
Let's recap the most frequently used correct plug choices:
Factory installed: MB part no. 004 159 13 03 (NGK ILFR6A [Stock #3588])
Bosch: FR6MPP332
Denso: IKH20 [Stock #5344]
Beru and Champion also show applications, but I'd stick with one of the choices above, and probably in the order listed.
