E63 $2600 front brake job after 25k miles?!?!?
So I have owned a few AMG cars but have never had to do a brake job because I trade pretty often. I took my car in for D service yesterday and was quoted $2600 for front brakes, they said the rotors were bad as well and couldn't be turned. I drive my car hard but not hard enough to toast rotors and brakes in 25k miles. Am I getting ripped off? Is this to be expected, I know this car is expensive to maintain but come on.
Also, if anyone is running into this are there aftermarket options, and other trustworthy shops in Chicago that aren't MB.
It is an 2007 E63

i had to do the breaks at 18k . MB "prefers" to replace the rotors with every AMG brake job. i didnt need them so i just did my brakes . buy the parts yourselve and have a mechanic u know do them , even if u need rotors u will save a bundle going outside of the dealer

Well, my dealer quoted $900 for front and rear brake pads--- they said my rotors were fine --- So, i would not be surprised if they quoted you that much $$$$...it is the dealer. I ended up buying EBC-reds and took a few casual hours and did them myself... it was a great decsion!

E55 then E63, now back to an E55
Here is what I know...
Rotors are two-piece & have a floating hat (secured with bolts). This improves on heat dissappation. Retail on each front rotor is $900. Wholesale is about $700... this is still very expensive compared to E55 rotors at $125 each. Although they do not recommend it, I found a place (and it can be done) that re-surfaced the rotor - based on thickness - for I believe $100 each. Not sure about the "turning" of cross-drilled or slotted rotors. I didn't want to be stuck with a stiff repair bill either because I don't even go to the track.
Now on another note, the 63's pads are MUCH easier to install and less labor intensive than the E55 because they removed the system (can't recall name currently) that had to be disabled or it may clamp the rotor shut and sever fingers. The pads are now incredibly easy to change.
Hope I was of some assistance and good luck.

I thought retail on the E63 rotors was closer to $1300? Also, if you have a floating setup, consider simply replacing the ring. Many companies make replacements. the hat is what is the core. Any E63 guy can upgrade the rotor and hardware vs replacing the entire rotor. You would save weight, which is a major feel bonus even if you do not track it.

Front pad...$225.00 list $288.00
Sensor.......$16.00 each x2 front & rear
Rotors........$795.00 each..list $920.00 each
And yes, they are easy to change, just got a lesson from a tech at Laguna Seca preping the cars for tomorrow.

oh Chitown E63...
you CAN in fact (if you choose) replace the rotors with a one-piece E55 rotor. they fit but you will lose some (non-noticeable) braking unless at the track. for city driving - if you can't get them resurfaced - I would probably do it...

I'd rather do the work myself too, but given how IMPORTANT the front brakes are and how much we demand of them (and how well they perform), something's gotta give. Can't get that type of braking performance w/out giving up some lifespan, or vice versa.

maybe it depends on the year -- but changing my pads could not be any easier... tap out 2 pins per caliper.. squeeze the pistons in with your Fingers.. Yes, your bare hands- no problem... that is it!!!

Hate to bump this up from the dead, but i was just quoted $3295 including tax and labor to replace the front rotors, pads and rear pads on an 07 E63. I almost passed out when i heard how much it was. The car is at 47k miles so hopefully this wont be an issue for at least another 50k miles. Is this pricing normal for any MB dealer?

Yeah, Benny where are you located? Go find a good Indy. There's no reason for the dealer to have to do the job, it's a maintenance item not a warranty issue, etc..
Have an Indy who knows AMGs do it with OEM parts and you'll save $$$.

Houston, TX. The dealer (Star Motors) was already given the go-ahead on the repair. I had to get it done asap, didnt have any other time to do it. Should have it back tomorrow.

To give you an idea of what your in for - Shardul went to MB Greenway to checkout my car for me (didn't know him and it was in response to my first post on the forum). Just prepare yourself for the "63's are slow" statments

Shardul is great guy and always seems to have the time to help anyone out, we meet up quite often here in Houston, make sure you PM one of us before you do anything, if we cant do it, we can find some one better and cheaper than the dealer for you.
