Am I the only person with black exhaust tips?!

And not by choice! My exhaust tips are constantly covered in carbon buildup. Does this happen to anyone else?

What could be causing this??

Carbon?

I tried a non-acidic wheel cleaner with little result. Brake parts cleaner may do the trick however, I would watch the paint just above them.

Mine are like that too. There are quite a few threads in here about cleaning it. For the thick stuff I've used a very fine steel wool with mettal polish, and some have recommended using the Magic Eraser.

Do you have cats? Eliminating cats will turn your tips black. I eliminated all 4 of mine and now they get blackish.

Mine are usually pretty dirty every wash. I've kicked around the idea of going with some other tips (black powder coated) but I can't bring myself to do it.

Mine blacken up as well. After cleaning most by hand I, I use chome polish on a drill powered buffing cone.

I think if I put something like Mothers FX Synwax it would clean off better.

I guess I was more concerned with the fact that it may be a sign of an improperly running engine??

I have all 4 cats still and I suppose they could be on their way out? I did pass smog recently though and I think the tips have looked like this for a while now.

I believe it's typical on forced induction cars. My 335i did the exact same thing.
Edit: Forgot to add... mine comes right off with a paper towel, if I keep up with it.

Brake parts cleaner for your regular wash and then a dremel with polishing pad always brings mine back to new when they get a little build up.
Carbon build up is normal, but if it's black and sooty it may indicate some fuel issues.

I have all 4 cats and have the same thing... Definitely does not mean the cats are on the way out...

That's weird, with all 4 cats my tips would only get black after a LONG time without washing the car and they would clean up right away. Now without the cats they get black in a few days and cleaning them is slightly more difficult.

You are certainly not the only one, I think that all AMGs suffer from this same issue. I have this with both of my AMGs.

The 63's do it just as much...Mine are blackened every week...A good wadding polish does really well on it with a little effort...

I have Brasso but it just seems like something is wrong to be causing this much build-up. There are emissions components in place to stop this from happening, right??

Same here. Wipe them off once or twice a week and it won't build up.

I found the best stuff is Menzerna metal polish (same company that makes the MB factory paint sealants and polishes.)
Works great.

Me and a guy with a C63 here have just concluded it's got something to do with the double wall tips No science involved in that and no clue, but every AMG I've ever seen does it...

Would that really affect the outside of the exhaust tip??
