Sorry but I respectfully disagree - getting cold air would be more beneficial than a short intake snout / design. Once the hood is closed the temperature around the engine is 160* +, then you add compression heat, and then try to cool the mix to avoid detonation. Using an average ambient temperature of ~ 80* where I live, would mean increasing the cooling system requirements by another 80* (a large amount). I am guessing they just could not find an easy path to the front
You can disagree all you want, but you aren't taking into consideration the pumping losses of a restrictive intake. I've done the tests myself and in my Pontiac Grand Prix I made more power with a filter straight on the TB( dynoed with the hood closed ) than I did with a 3" intake into the fender. I later modified the fender opening and fit a 4" pipe and that's when the intake made more power than a filter straight on the TB.
I later did the same on my 1.8T GTI and I could never get an intake that made more power than a filter directly on the MAF and straight into the the turbo inlet. Granted, I could never fit a pipe larger than 3". Not only that, but I measured IAT's with these setups on this car and the open filter did not raise IAT's AT ALL...I could not measure a single degree difference between a CAT and a HAI. That's an efficient intercooler doing it's job.
On my E55 I saw the oposite, the open TB made less power then the oem airbox. The oem airbox isn't half bad though especially when modified and the oem intercooler is already at it's wits even with cool intake air and probably can't handle hotter air.
Now, the Weistec setup? Try pumping 700whp worth of airflow through a 3" pipe that'll be at least 3 feet long. The open cone will make a lot of sense after you do. Perhaps those who buy it can make a large intake that will help feed it properly. Either way, I guess we'll find out.
FWIW, if you know how to read compressor maps, you know that intake restriction affects how you apply a map to an engine.

You are correct I am not taking into consideration the pumping loss of a restrictive intake, as I would not recommend installing a restrictive intake. The example you provide with your Pontiac, proved that on your application the the 4" was better than the 3", which would make sense for a highly modified car. The turbo scenario is slightly different, but I have a lot of data (and it has been discussed ad nauseum on other sites) that still shows a properly designed CAI is better than just an open filter, especially in low speed courses or events (at high speeds the difference can be negligible).

A properly designed CAI is definitely better than an open cone, I never said otherwise. The problem is making a properly designed CAI on the Weistec setup. I'm not sure how possible it is without modifying a few things underhood, such as the radiator.

600rwhp through this 3.0 Weistec is PLENTY on the street for a E55. One of the holy grails in terms of the fastest daily driven street cars, with a/c, reliability and cheaper enough for the common folk, is the twin screw terminator cobras. They make 600rwhp easily on pump gas around 18lbs, and will last for a very long time if taken care of with a solid tune.
Now put that same power level into a E55, and you too should have an easy pump gas 600rwhp car at less boost, I am thinking around 15lbs. I will tell you this, very rarely do twin screw cobras lose on the street, they have a damn good reputation. But I saw first hand when I was up at Timmayfest, a 600rwhp cobra get *** raped by a 530rwhp e55. They went at it twice and both times, the e55 from a 30mph role jumped out 3 cars from the hit and held it. The mustang could not real it in. For those of us that were there, it was an E55 on this board, and his power level I believe is 530/580 on a dynojet. He can reveal himself on here if he wants. Three of us on this forum where there to see it first hand.
Now imagine adding 70rwhp more with the Weistec Part of the problem is, if you start shooting for 650rwhp or even 700rwhp, you will never hook up, and will probably get your *** handed to you by lesser cars. I am not saying the E55 is a lesser car than a twin screw cobra, but that guy had 315 Nitto Drags, and the e55 was on 20" street tires, poor cobra could still not hook up, where as the beast squatted and hole shotted..... There comes a point when to much power is useless.

Roll around on real drag radials and you should be ok. I did it with over 600whp. Actually there's a vid from a few years ago of my car running a cobra. He was shocked

I have raced a 3.4 Whipple Cobra at the track before, he said he had 700 or 750whp if I remember right with a built engine, etc. He was on some worn out drag radials and I was on my regular street tires on 19s. I had my GoPro stuck to the side of my car facing backward for the heck of it which would have been awesome since I ended up beating him, but they made me take it off saying they don't allow suction cup mounts at that track so didn't get it on video.
He was all over the track, I was watching him in my rearview/sideview mirror almost the whole track as he fishtailed all over the place trying to beat me lol. He trapped like 126 if I remember right but ran a high 12.
I would like to see that video mentioned above if someone can find it.

Yup rolling with my friends at muscle car weekend
It's not much, just a quick hit but it was first gear on Dr and it hooked fine. I drive around on Dr alot and it always hooked, maybe my suspension was set up right. I didn't try from a dead stop though. It was years ago so I was running lower boost than when it let go. Still a mid 10s car back then. It's around 2:50 into the video

I drove around on drag radials (Hoosiers) for about 250 miles before the crank pulley killed it and it would hook up pretty well honestly. It would spin in 1st but you could keep it flat footed and it would recover fast and that was around 620rwhp. I sprayed the 50 shot on a 60-130 run starting at 45mph 2nd gear and it dead hooked so I think traction will be ok. On street tires I could spin at 70mph easily just rolling into it and the traction light would blink past 100 so it was fighting for grip the whole time. That's also with the Quaife diff too

Yeah, I went on their site and "pretend" ordered the stage 3 kit for the 63, go figure I was able to do it but then went to 55k and it was "out of stock." They just really hate us I suppose.

Nothing like announcing a product you haven't actually finished. By the way did I mention I finished my whipple kit and it's for sale but it's out of stock right now

After this thread started, I posted my insight into this company:
Weistec then contacted him and told him that until I deleted my original post, they would not fix his car. He then contact me and told me to delete the post, and I had it deleted out of respect to his wishes.
After speaking with a friend who is a lawyer, I discovered that this sort of blackmail is in fact illegal. You sure you want to be giving these guys your money?
Weistec: Why don't you contact me directly this time if you're going to muscle down people...

He was planning on originally going with a Renntech tune before I more or less convinced him to check out Weistec's tune. Long story short, it was a very unsatisfying experience for him. It made me look bad for referring him to Weistec because of how poorly he was treated and the damage done.
My point is, before you all spend a lot of money for this kit, see it in person, and maybe get to know them a little bit better. I'm not saying that everyone has poor experiences with them, and I'm sure it must be a rarity, but I can only speak from his experience, and because of that, I don't think I could do business with them.
