Power steering pump and fluid

I noticed today that my PS pump is literally almost out of fluid... There is no leaks and the dealer filled it up 2 years ago, Do these pumps eat up fluid? What fluid should I throw in here? Just any synthetic fluid? searched and found info on leaks and one "going nuclear", but nothing on fluid. What do you guys run?

not checked your fluid in 2 years, what do you smoke besides your lights? anyways check your steering rack, it is probably leaking into the plastic belly pan under the car, the rack is the long piece with the two rods coming out one on each side that attaches to the wheels. There will be two hoses attached, also a point of possible leakage. There are plastic bellows which cover the tie rods, if no leakage is seen anywhere else, take a sharp awl and poke a hole in the bellows on either side at the bottom to see if the fluid is in the bellows. Good luck

no, use the pentosin.

11s or chf202

oh, and the pump does not "eat" fluid. If its low, you have a leak.

Two rubber seals? I've replaced two reservoirs in two cars and they have had only one seal.

I noticed on another thread that the PS pump is almost universal on all Mercedes, with only the reservoir changes. Where can I get another one?

only one seal.

Why are you replacing the reservoir? Its a piece of plastic. You can replace the seal if you think its leaking from there, otherwise there isn't much point.

Exactly, I have heard there a little filters built in. So might as well replace it as maintenance

I've been told by a few people that the reservoir has a built in filter. One of those people is a guy I have always found very knowledgable when it comes to MB so I don't know.

Advance Auto Parts regularly stocks both Pentosin fluids at a favorable price. It is also used in the ABC system on cars that have that system. Why pay more?

That's where I got mine. Behind the counter. With new green fluid no more whine or noise. Fluid drained out was honey brown !!

I have to check mine. I plan on flushing my fluid and so I should be able to see it when empty.

Not necessarily. That particular fluid evaporates over time, so if the levels haven't been checked in some time and you find it low with no leaks, this is likely what happened.

Where does it evaporate to? The system is pretty sealed.

Probably the cap, but I haven't examined it. It's got to be vented somewhere to account for thermal expansion of the fluid. It will expand around 7% in volume from a cold morning to a spirited drive with a hot engine.
