slightly smaller pulley with a smaller belt will help keep the angles setup properly - although, the best method is to go with the belt-wrap kit if you want to ensure you don't lose any power to belt slippage

yup, i've been running my stock belt for 15k on the smaller pulley - just refreshed my belt (it was due) so I opted for a slightly smaller one...

it's only 1/2" shorter, not a huge deal

Is it better to have the belt tighter (50.5") or have more surface area contacting the pulley (51")?

it's better to have more surface area - check the pics in post #72
https://mbworld.org/forums/5763296-post72.html

IMHO I have more surface area on my belt in comparison to the other belt - not sure what size that one was - see the angle difference?

rchase - what size belt was that one?

So is stock Gates K080510HD or Gates K080505HD?
(i.e., stock crank pulley/stock SC pulley/no belt wrap kit)

Toad - Your thread says:
Gates K080505HD V-Belt - close to OEM size $25

Want to confirm before I order, thanks!

Stock belt is 50.74"

I have stock pulleys and I think I'm going with a 510. My logic is that the longer belt will allow more belt surface area to be in contact with the SC pulley.

Could be totally wrong though and maybe the higher tension of the shorter 505 belt is better.

Anybody want to chime in?

From the Gates website:
  • K080505HD: 50.49"
  • K080510HD: 50.95"
So if stock is: 50.74"

I would think the 505 is the choice to go with.

I just put on a Gates K080496 Green stripe belt. I just got a s/c pulley, the stock belt slides in and out with ease. This belt fits tight as hell.

how far do you crank open the tensioner? I felt like I had tons of space to put a belt on - I used an allen wrench to hold the tensioner open

I used the 17mm ranch to open the tensioner as far to the left as I could. It was still pretty tight. Of course I'm comparing this to the stock belt size. It still won't take more than a few minutes either way.

I went with the 505. Definitely the right choice for a stock pulley.

2005 E55 AMG
just to re-clarify

OEM size is 51 inches for the S/C belt

belt length is the last 3 digits - so OEM would be a 510 belt (or 51.0")

a shorter belt may be beneficial when using the S/C pulley as it's smaller - so this thread talks about the 505 belt which is 50.5" (so 1/2 inch shorter)

the 496 belt is 49.6" (duh) so it's about 1.4" shorter than the OEM belt

hope this helps!
