But page after page is citations to state courts - not even federal courts, let alone the Supreme Court. In south Carolina, they can stop you and ask for your license, by law you do not have to give it to them or answer any questions.

There are many cases that were simply used to establish certain legal precedents for future rulings. Look up the Supreme Court precedent for "Right to Travel". The link refers to a case unrelated to driving without a license but it's precedent was used many times to successfully win state cases for driving without a license.
