Smells like fuel in the cabin

I pulled the rear seat and checked under both inspection plates and it's bone dry.

What do I do next?

It's intermittent. Sometimes full tank, sometimes quarter tank. Sometimes not at all. Sometimes I think one spark will blow me to smithereens

i just had my gas tank replaced due to same issue. its a common problem with the E class w211 platform. take it to a trusted mechanic and have them check the car. i had no gas under backseat but had gas smell inside car and off and on. i actually joined a class action lawsuit for this same issue. good luck. here is a link to the thread i started on my problem.

+1 unfortunately it could be the gas tank which is a costly repair, I had my senders replaced under warranty and the smell was still there... Since I had a warranty I went ahead and had them replace the tank as well!
Good luck!

another common fuel leak that often gets over looked is the fuel pressure dampener.it's on the fuel rail at the back of the motor, passanger side, under the throttle body.the oring dries out and it will start leaking.usually when the motor is cold.
you can get a replacement at rockauto http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...792&cc=1431058

Are the e55 tanks specific or universal among certain years of e-class?

Ooh, I got in the car today and it didn't smell like fuel. Soon as I turned the air on tho it came pouring out the vents with outside air on. Outside air draws air from the engine bay, through the hood vent, correct?

Does this lead one to think it's not the tank, rather something underhood?

If you read the post from Jonnyc, you'd have your answer...

here is a link to a thread with pics on the topic that jonnyc mentioned. i thought it was my fuel pressure dampner as well but indeed up being the tank. it wouldnt hurt to have your tank looked at by a quality mechanic. he could also check the dampner for you as well. good luck. i get my car back tomorrow and cant wait!

Did you open the hood and see if you smell gas there? Is your fuel rail stock?

Like others mentioned, the tank gas leak is very common.

I've had this very problem. My fpd was leaking gas all down the passenger side of my transmission bell housing right next to the cats. it's a cheap and fairly easy fix.

Ok he checked out the dampener and it looked good however when he pulled the throttle body off to look he said he found fuel inside there. Any ideas why that could be?

I'm going to replace the dampener anyway since it's cheap.

You have gas in the throttle body? Unless I am mistaken, that is impossible.

I'm pointing him in the directions you guys suggest cause I can't seem to get the gas smell to re occur while it's with him and I can't afford to be like "smelled like gas once, fix it. Good luck"

He's actually one of the best mechanics I've ever dealt with. Fair, honest, meticulous.
