These axles are internally lubricated, and requires no lubrication. As you already ascertained.

Well that would definitely explain it. What a mess, doesn't look like much fun cleaning this muck up.
Not to mention needing new shaft shaft seals. Still this will require many hours of labor to fix.

Clean it and see if the boot is split. I’m pretty sure these are non serviceable. So start looking for an axle. Last I checked a new one from MB was around $700-800.
How do I know?....mine did the same thing. Right side inner for me.

if the CV joint is ok just get a stretch boot fitted, i cant remember the size but it worked for me and took couple of hours to do

measure the shaft size and you should be fine with a stretch boot, installing an original boot will be a pain as it will require pulling apart the shaft cv joint, up to you good luck

Just a failed axle boot, replace it and carry on. People are too dramatic.
The fronts on the newer cars can be bought separately, check if there's a boot kit available, they aren't difficult to replace once you have the axle out.
