I just wondered if have regretted buying a E55 amg, when the new v10 bmw m5 is only months away.
Check the stats and see if it changes your mind.
05' M5
V10 5.0L engine
507bhp
389 lb/ft torque
500nm
0-62.5mph in <4.7s (beleived to be 4.5)
lighter than a mercedes badge lol
and is able to go around corners- unlike E55's.
priced at around £60-65K.
so i guess you will all be selling your E55's that only has 469bhp and a measly V8 with a kompressor celotaped to the side of it.
i bet AMG will fight back by sticking two V8s together that weigh the same as two buses in the E55, cranking the horsepower up to 2000hp and see what happens. and put the price up by about 50%.
guys remember bmw = the ultimate driving machine.

J-dub, we understand you seem to dislike the E55. Keep the negativity to yourself. It's our money and we will spend it as we like.
Besides, looking at the dyno results, the E55 has almost equivalent amount of HP and even more torque compared to the new M5. I don't like the design anyway.

I don't think you are going to see a lot of cross pollination on this issue from the hard core AMG/M constituency.
W210 E55 owners that have bought the new W211 E55k didn't buy an E39 M5 back in the day, so obviously they are AMG people. And, conversely, E39 M5 owners that are waiting for the E60 M5 didn't buy a W210 E55 or a W211 E55k because they are M people. Yeah, I'm sure there are E39 M5 owners out there that sold their car for a W211 E55k and are planning on selling their W211 for an E60. However, that is not because the W211 is a bad car, its because they are the kind of people that want to drive the flavor of the week and have the money to do it. And that's not a bad way to go, btw.

I am always amazed at how insecure some BMW owners are.. Freaks me out..
Insecurity complex.. The guys is talking about a car that doesn't even exist yet..
Did you know that in a 2 years Intel will have a processor that is faster then the current ones.. Stop using your computer, please, it will be slow..

Hmm, 500hp and only 389 lb/ft of torque. I would say the E55 will still have a much larger area under curve. Another thing. The problem with the E55 is all the weight up front with an inadequate tire from the factory. The old M5 had a lighter engine with no s/c to add weight up front so of course it had better balance. The new one is going to have a bigger engine up there so who's to say it wont have the same balance problems as the E55? Now perhaps BMW will put a little more tire up front, but you could also do the same with the MBZ.

So Jdub...
I thought you were an intelligent member, but clearly you're not. I take back what I "took back" earlier...
So what do you drive, and what do you have on order? An '05 M5, right? Let's see your order sheet.... i'm sure you can find a scanner or a digital camera that'll suffice

That's why the E36 M3 was such a marvelous car.. in addition to a torque band as flat as Kansas, it had that beautiful gearbox that fit each part of the tork curve like a glove, you could always find a sweet spot.
I imagine the 2005 M5 will be little different from it's //M predecessors in this respect. Also, the M5 will rev at least 1000rpms higher to use up more of the peak hp.

Your question is better suited to a thread called, "RWD vs. AWD" ..

Oh, and the kind of enthusiasts that really care about that last little bit of performance are likely to modify their cars. This is where the gap should really widen. The E55, being blown, can see big power increases. I would not expect the same from the M5.
Of course none of this answers wether the new M5 will be balanced and neutral as the old car.

Some people enjoy shifting, buddy, most notably car mag editors that have put the E55 second to the M5 year after year b/c of the auto-tragic gearbox and the unrelenting electronic stability in the MB.
I don't see what increasing the '55's brutish power will do for it other than make it a top-fuel dragster, and devilishly fun on suburban roads and highways. Many enthusiasts would first consider handling modifications prior to adding to the wealth of hp under the hood of the MB.

...if he wouldnt trade his "old" M5 for the new M5.. why would we trade such a marvelous car as the E55 on one? That makes no sense.

The thrill of the E55 IS the monster torque. The greatest pleasure I get from my car is hammering the throttle from 70 mph and being pushed back in my seat form the 500+ lb-ft trying to separate the rear axle from the rest of the car. The M5 either past or upcoming will not match that sensation.
On two prior occasions, I engaged the ESP when punching it from 70 mph. The V8 Kompressor is awesome, baby. I doubt the NA 6.3 will be as much fun.
