Edmunds First Drive: 06 M5

Came upon this article while browsing another forum. My pops drives an E55 and I have to say that this being his first benz coming from a long list of bemers I hope that the E55 beats the new 5 in a straight line. The car is the total package and I love every minute i am behind the wheel. Just wanted to post the link so you guys could check it out. Like i said i have an E55 in the family and love the car so im not trying to instigate anything. This is just the first thorogh review i have seen on the new M5 and thought a few of you guys ( i think theres a few on the waiting list) would like to see this. I have to admit it did make me smile.

I'm disapppointed!!

I love my E55 and I am #1 on the list for the M5. Being a car ***** I was hoping for a real breakthrough. First 0-62 4.7 car mags have E55 at 4.2 0-60. Second that smg tranny sounds more involved than setting a new radio station with i-drive. It's also obvious to me that they haven't removed the jerkiness of that smg tranny. I think I'm going to pass on any first year buy on this m5.

Good point on the SMG tranny. Jerky is an understatement. Every SMG equipped M3 I have been in, (7 that I can think of), shoved and jerked and basically made the ride really unpleasent. I was not impressed. Lets see how reliable this new system in the M5 ends up being, sounds overly complex.

Like you said, CAR MAGS have the E55 at 4.2 or whatever 0-60 mph. BMW CLAIMS 0-62 in 4.7. That means about 4.5 0-60 according to BMW. Car mags could probably bring that 0-60 4.0.

The new M5 is not doing anything like 4 flat for 0-60, keep dreaming.

I like the SMG system in the M3, the one in the 545i SUCKS!!! I had one for a few weeks (it was in the shop most of that time). If it's an evolution of the SMG in the 545, prepare for disappointment. Personally I prefer the new Audi double clutch system (I think it's called DSG)

The worst thing about all new bmw's =- i-drive. IT SUCKS!!!!

I am a car nut and I like many different models & many different brands. I am sure the new M5 will be a great car but I just can't get past the looks. No matter how fast it is or how well it handles I would still be thinking-I am driving a car that looks like an ugly Pontiac.

The SMG in the M5 is NOTHING like the one in the 545i. The M5 has a 7-speed SMG while the 545i has a 6-speed SMG. The 545i SMG shifts no where near as fast the M5 version.

And how do you know how different SMG is in a m5 if you never driven one...?

No doubt about it...BMW failed in its goal to match or even beat the E55 with its '05 M5. A valiant attempt but a pathetic outcome. Next time guys....next time.

hi guys,

i like the look of the new M5 over the standard 5 series.
i don't doubt that the car will be impressive but BMW really blew
it by not putting in a manual transmission. smg imho is a
quirky choice for a transmission in a production car. i'm sure
it has its fans but i would venture a guess that more people
would prefer a basic 6 speed transmission or even an automatic
to the smg.

He has special connection at BMW; he is their M5 test driver and this is why he knows soooooo much about the M5. I will bet he is out testing the SMG right now!!!

In which particular aspect did it fail? Do you know something that we don't?
.....seriously i doubt anyone here really knows whether it failed or suceeded performance wise which is all the really matters, and comments like that are based on your preferences which doesn't mean all that much to the rest of us.

i've heard that the smg has several settings each has a different level of smoothness and shift time depending on whats required.

If you have a fast shift it must be somewhat jerky else the energy is dissipated as heat from clutch slippage or viscous action rather than for power transmission.
Same as with trying to launching off the line well, something has to slip be it tyres, clutch etc etc else you'll bog down.

You all complain how crap SMG is, yet you don't seem to be complaining about the F1 transmission in the Enzo.

It's common sense.

The SMG in the M3 is totally different than the one in the regular 3 Series.

The SMG III in the M5 has 7 gears and shifts in 0.05 seconds. Is that anything like the SMG in the regular 5 Series??

You can come here and flame and get a back and forth, but as an old saying goes, you cannot turn a sow's ear into a silk purse. Or as Forrest Gump would say, ugly is as ugly does.

....M5 will an E55 rival....and as we are all car enthusiast here we must all consider it and be aware of our enemies...

The new M5 will be great!!! We all must admit that...as much as we love our car there always be something faster and better...

I will post again a review by Autoweek UK:

More titbits.
Did I mention the noise? Best soundtrack of any car, ever! Goes through so many different vocal planes that it's impossible to describe. It wails and howls and bellows on its way up to its pure F1 noise at the top of the rev range.

Noticable step in power delivery just before 6000rpm. Every time you red-line it and flick up to the next cog you're bang slap right in the middle of the sweet spot. Super fast, even in 400bhp mode. However, slip it into P500 Sport (have to use iDrive or pre-program the M-Drive button) and it's quite simply the fastest thing I've ever driven.

It sounds like the HUD was faulty on the edmunds car - the one in mine worked a treat!

'Our' test car was Interlagos - not a bad colour, but it's got a tad too much purple in it for my taste.

The chassis's great. There is a whiff of understeer in slower corners, but that's expected with something that weights the best part of two tonnes. In medium and high speed bends the grip is awesome, and BMW's claims that it'll pull over 1g are entirely believable.

Brakes are mighty powerful, although there is a bit of grumble from them after you've used them heavily, but this affects just about every car with drilled discs.

SMG works a treat, although it's a real bang bang on upshifts in S5 and S6 modes, especially if you don't lift. S4 is proably the best compromise - still very fast cahnges, but with a little more comfort. Not all that keen on SMG auto mode - prefer to do it myself.
In sequential there's a 'kickdown' point on the throttle where it will drop down the perfect number of ratios to get maximum attack acceleration - very useful for picking off dawdling German holiday makers. As always the way it blips the throttle everytime you want to downchange is just marvellous, and I don't think I'd ever tire of flicking up and down the box!

Economy isn't its strong point, but you wouldn't expect it to be would you! We saw a worst of 9mpg, a best of 18, and an average of 13mpg.

It's brilliantly stable on the Autobahn. You can sit at an indicated 270km/h all day long with really not a huge amount of windnoise, and its aggressive front end gets traffic moving out of your way like Moses parting the Red sea.

It would still be nice to have a manual, but BMW's so wrapped up in the F1 tie up that I can't see it happening. The way the cogs are arranged in the seven speed it would be impossible to make this box a manual.

Overall though, a brilliant piece of kit.

Cheers

Bob

I dont even know WHYYYYY OH WHY should we even compare those two, M5 is F1 inspired 10 cylinder 507 BHp 7speed SMGIII DAMN IT, THAAAA BEAST!!! IT is defenetly outruns everything on the road and on the track, Its an ultimate driving machine THE BEST OF THE BEST !!!! And E55 is just a car with monster torqe which cannot be put to the ground, its only 0.84 on the skidpad compred to over 1 g for m5, it's forced induction coz benz cannot make fast N/a engines...and YES ITS A SLUSHBOX.... WE ALL AGREE....

NOW ALL THE TROLLS CAN LEAVE WITH PEACE!

But anyway I still would pick E55!
