New Guy going to buy an E63S

Hello. I have a few questions and thought that you guys would be able to answer them as well as or better than a Dealer. I am in the market for a 15-16 E63S. I am a car junkie and have owned some cool cars but never a Mercedes. I am looking forward to making the purchase. I live in North FL and more than likely will have to travel to get precisely what I want.

At this time, I have only seen 1 in real life so on top of travel, I may have to travel within FL JUST to test drive one. Should be a fun time as I flew to OH to buy my 335i, below.

Anyway, through this forum and internet searches I was able to answer most of my questions. I still have 2:

I am looking for a 2015-2016..is there any considerable difference between the 2 model years? Should I be searching for one year vs. the other?

lso, due to the nature of these cars and how advanced they are, I will need to buy a CPO or at least a solid warranty. If I find what I want at an independent dealership vs. a Mercedes dealer, can I have it CPO'd or buy a warranty from a local dealer? Go another route?

I currently have tuned and tastefully upgraded cars: 2009 335i and 6MT 2015 GTI. I will be replacing the BMW with the Mercedes. I have always wanted an e39 M5 but the Mercedes seems just too cool and my wife will occasionally drive it (can't drive an MT).

2015 SE 306 WHP

2009 Monaco Blue 335i. 400 WHP

Thanks in advance for your help.

Agree with comments above - 2016 GUI (called 5.x) is actually quite a lot more modern than the prior version - in my mind makes the car feel at least 5 years younger. 2016 is also the last year of the model - all small inks are usually worked out by then.
But car is year newer and the last year => steeper deprecation curve for the nxt 2-3 years, after that all of these (14-16) will cost the same and price will be determined by mileage and records etc.

You can't buy a CPO warranty unless you buy the car from a MB dealer. Generally. There are always exceptions but that depends on your relationship with the dealer. There are plenty of after market warranties out there.

I have an E39 as my Sunday driver and that car I will never well. It is truly the last "mechanical enough" BMW in my (and many others) mind, maybe combined with the prior M3 (last naturally aspirated V8). The E63 is a rocketship and an appliance for speed. The E39 M5 is a masterfully balanced machine that requires work and thought to drive.

There is really no difference between the 2015 and 2016 E63s except the Navigation. Be sure you get the E63(S) and depending on how long you plan on keeping it, factory warranty on a 2016 will expire on 2020 ( 4 years factory warranty ) plus 1 year CPO warranty that will then put you to 2021 so you might not need any extended out of pocket warranty if you don’t plan on keeping it after 2021 when your CPO warranty expires.

Also be sure the limited slip differential fluid was changed as well as the spark plugs. Pano roof doesn’t have the cracking noise when going over speed bumps and then have fun with her.

You can check with the vendors mentioned in the extended warranty sub forum. If it has the original factory warranty, you can get up to 7 years/100k, but there's lots of rules like if it's sold by an MB dealer, then it doesn't qualify, has to be CPO. Have the vendors check the vin to make sure it qualifies. CPO comes with one year, but you can buy 2 extra years, usually much cheaper from the vendors mentioned in the forum than the dealer.

+1 for the e39/e9X love. The e9X engine will go down as the greatest, and last, naturally aspirated V8 ever made by BMW. And once you drive an e39 M5, every other car will seem wrong in some way. If I had any extra cash I’d snap up an e9X right now, I would wager that car will only increase in value.

if you’re looking for an e63 sedan, stick with the 16. If you’re looking for a wagon, it’s provenance provenance provenance. Get the best 2014-2016 out there regardless of price.

This is outstanding! Thank you so much for sharing. So do I get a PPI? An extended warranty is 100% the route I am going as everything is $$. Coming from a Porsche, I know it can get ugly.

if it's cpo, one could argue you don't have to get a PPI, but if you don't mind shelling out for a little extra reassurance ... the PPI could save you from major issues even on a cpo car that has a major issue or an issue that they overlooked despite making it cpo

Autodidact E63S

I haven't owned a supercar since I sold my 1996 911 TT in 2005 to purchase real estate in Cali (wrong!). I am always the 2nd or 3rd owner of my cars, bought one small car brand new just because. That said, I researched the sh*t out of these cars, and I love my 2014 E63S. Its loaded, comfortable on long trips, entertaining and super-fast. I saw that all the newer W212 E63s are 577hp. I defer to the expert owners here, but I prefer a big engine over a high-performance 4.0L, I'm just skeptical. If I hadn't wanted the extra hp & torque, I would've bought an actual 2012 6.3L. Waiting to tune it for 91 gas here in Cali, but I LOVE this car. It's perfect. Get the latest in the series, or a low mileage 2015, you're going to love it!!

my stock e63S dyno'd (dynojet) 546/600 at the wheels hp/tq; you decide what parasitic loss % you wanna use from crank to wheels and then calculate crank/brake hp

at 20% loss we are at 682/750 stock
at 15% loss we are at 642/705 stock

renntech says the w213 is closer to 15% loss and the w212 is closer to 20%

I had a 320i sport back in the day. Drove the crap out of it, it was a great car! Moved up to Porsche & Mercedes when my stock went public... Back to Mercedes finally, covers ALL bases for me. You're gonna love it, too!

I enjoyed all of my BMWs. I had an e46 M3...a well-rounded, tremendous car! I just got out of a 997 C2s. Liked the car, didn't love it. Brakes and handling were to die for, thats about it. I would get a turbo with PDK.

Looking forward to getting my new car!

I think those numbers are stock vs tuned? I wonder if those are tuned with downpipes or just ECU alone
