Hum hum noise from drivetrain at 30mph+?
Hey guys, so i been noticing a hum hum sound from my car when im going 30+mph.. Its more like a hum hum hum... etc, and it doesnt speed up or slow down much.. but its consistent.
I only hear it when the radio is off and all windows closed, it isnt very very pronounced but its a soft hum..
Car is running perfect, i just put new Michelins on all 4 corners, balanced and a wheel alignment at the dealer about 1000 miles ago. Checked everything under the car via the dealer and my personal mechanic at my indy, everything is tight and in good condition. But sound still remains.
Changed the rear diff fluid recently just to have her nice and clean but sound is still there.. It sounds like its coming from the middle or front of the drivetrain, hard to pinpoint.
My car has 18K miles total now.
Anyone have this or heard of this?

All Rpms it's the same if you're at 40mph? Even if you blip the paddles to downshift while maintaining 40mph?
same in comfort mode and s, s+?
can it be recorded on video?

Have the center support bearing on the drive shaft checked. This was the issue on my 2016, Took two trips to the dealer and a consultation with the folks in Germany to figure out what the origin of the sound. And take a look at this thread to see if your symptoms are similar. For me, it occurred at 30mph but would go away when at highway speeds.:

Ah you must be referring to the black wagon that went for like 90k, No, mine is an E63 Sedan and I can happily say I still have it. My wife has the wagon in our family but wanted something with good MPG, so we split the difference, I took the E63 Sedan and she took a VW TDI Wagon.

BTW...consider becoming a 2 wagon household...my e63 waggy and the wifes 328xi waggy make a pretty solid pairing
Those TDI wagons are great though...i had an '11 Golf TDI and that drivetrain was fantastic.

Same thing - they replaced the center bearing and noise was gone. Master tech went out on drive with mechanic to hear the noise.
Interestingly, mine is a '16 as well.
If you go through thread referenced in the above threads there seems to be a fairly well known issue at this point.

My 15 was doing the same thing, also with a slight rattling/whirring sound. Car is having same part replaced as we speak, under warranty at Daytona MB.

I think im having the same issue, i recorded this sound which my car makes intermittently to bring with me to the dealer to eval. Does this sound like its the same issue?
Shows up randomly from cold start, 30-50mph, disappears when the engine's warm. Of course when I brought it in, I couldn't reproduce it.
Would anything bad happen if I didn't get it fixed?

However, there is a fix described by benz which I got the dealer to do thanks to this board. It's a 2~2.5mm shim + realignment of the driveshaft. Fixed it for me, no more of that ticking sound at 50~60kph.

Thanks
that issue is with something described as the driveshaft hanger bearing. I've had the same thing so has many many others on this board. There is no TSB for it which I disagree with as it's a very common issue.

Hello, I have the W12 E350 4matic 2011 with 40K miles, there is a hum...hum...noise at 25-30mph that stays at any speed upwards...extremely annoying...77 decibels at 70mph...in my opinion it's definitely a drive train issue...the noise can be heard in the cabin with windows up...not a tire issue since the humming remains even on newly paved roads...bearing noise is steady...not hum...hum or wu...we...wu...
I had the car on 4 stands...couldn't hear the noise...will keep updating if I find the cause...😊

UPDATING
I did a few more checks...to my surprise the passenger side alignment was out especially the rear, had it corrected and installed new Michelins...as the old ones were damaged (capped) the ride improved on ice and snow and the annoying noises totally eliminated ...now I can enjoy long drives again...
