I'm considering purchasing a 2012 E63s. However, trying to find out how it is a "S". It seems like the "S" is associated with the P30 package, but I don't see the P30 package listed on the VIN. Are there other codes that could make it an "S"?
So if they're selling it as a 2012 e63 "S" there is no such thing as- as you know and mentioned it's the p30 package and that must be listed on the build sheet or VMI
I'm not totally intimate with the e63s. After further research, the wheels look to be CLS63. The speedo shows 200mph, the paddle shifters are aluminum. You can see the "S" tagged on the trunk. I read somewhere that these were part of the AMG package...? But when I ran the VIN, there was nothing indicating as much.

got it:
the "S" is off of eBay and added by one of the previous owners.
this was a rental car and usually Hertz or Enterprise would add these to their "exotic"
collection back in 2012 when it was new and they would get the BASE model - no LSD and no P30 package. They also would not option the car with premium forged twin five spoke rims usually.
since it's being sold by Fields bmw, ask them for a build sheet on the car - they can request it from Mercedes
those wheels also did not come with the car - I suspect they are knock offs with red center caps; they may seem legit but I highly suspect they are fake amg rims and likely even the dealer won't know what to look for to confirm this. Since they are likely fake, they will not be forged rims.
all e63's had paddles and I think a 200 speedo

This is correct. My 2013 wagon has the P30 “power package”. In other countries besides the US, this was considered the S because they continued rear wheel drive in other countries when we went to all-wheel-drive in that model and the s designation appeared here.
Right, I knew the "S" in the later models as being AWD. I see the discrepancy in the earlier years now.
Any thoughts on why I shouldn't purchase, other than it being a rental? The car is very clean and low miles. I could check the cylinders for wear to make sure it wasn't abused.

timing chain was revised around 2013; see sticky
split cooling was added in 2013; see sticky
rentals aren't warmed up - they are turned on and driven hard, but I guess if you scope everything and get a PPI and it drives nice it's reasonable.
the sticky has tons of info on m157 issues in general that you've likely poured through / all reasons to potentially totally avoid an m157 engine - ymmv

For me, as it was the first year of the S is 2014, and 2014 was the start of 4Matic in the US.... the S means "4Matic" more than anything. I have never seen an E63 in the states and and not have the P30 (S) package.
