My 2022 Build

The transmission is smooth as molasses. No more dual clutch so I'm sure the AMG is better in manual mode but the AMG can't match BMW's in automatic mode. Smooth and effortlessly fast. (Why they didn't tune the M5 Comp this way is beyond me.) The ceramic brakes are the most effortless I've ever felt for a large sedan. This car is SICK. I want to hate BMW for what they've done with designs as of late plus M everything mentality but this car's drawn me back in. The wagon is obviously more practical in every way but doesn't have the finesse of the M5.
The bucket seats are pretty amazing. Easy in and out, unlike Porsche GT cars I'm used to. They couldn't really be more supportive. The adjustments are just enough to properly cradle the driver without being overly harsh.
The BMW's electronics are more satisfying to use, including the user interface. Simple. iDrive?
I'm awaiting my new wagon and will be fun to compare them together for a few months before selling one.
Aesthetically, I prefer the AMG wagon's exterior and BMW's interior.
I only have a couple hundred miles on the clock and haven't pushed it much so take my initial impressions with a grain of salt. For now I could only wish this were a wagon and with normal seats for greater ease of use. The M5 isn't much of a sleeper. Will report back in a few weeks.
My original plane was to sell the Plaid (which I enjoy more and more the more I drive it) when the M5 arrives but now I think about keeping both (as my wife, bless her heart, suggested recently).

I was waiting to buy the F90 when the CS came out. I am sure it is fantastic driver - but the gold trim and silly seats are a deal breaker. I ordered an individual competition instead.
Seats must be experienced in person, yes, they are a bit more difficult to plant your butt in them but once you do you can not help but admire the fit and comfort they provide, a truly special design.

BMW has nailed seating position with these buckets. Always said BMW makes the best seats in the business after two F10 M5s. It's perfect. Better than Porsche too. These buckets perfectly cradle you in optimal driver's position. You can see right over the hood. In the wagon I felt the hood went for miles and no matter how high I adjusted the seat (head hitting roof) I could not get comfortable seeing over the hood. Anyone else have a similar experience?

The Best of Mercedes & AMG

Yes, you're right it does feel like an SUV. Actually feels larger than my full-size RR. I can tell you the M5 CS also has a very large bulge in the hood and the seating position is impeccable. No feeling of being anywhere near the roof yet you have perfect visibility and the car feels small.
Sadly, nobody makes a perfects car. The wagon is close to all-around perfection but not without multiple flaws.

I loved my 2006 M5 with SMG, it was much, much better then the F1 in my old 355 (which conditioned and trained me to the peculiar characteristics of that type of transmission).
It never bothered me in that car, rather the opposite, it was a constant source of fun while driving it.

Glad to hear somebody liked the SMG II: fun in driving is why we spend all that money!
Disaster is understatement in my experience as car would drop the clutch at low speed, randomly, for no apparent reason. Happening while starting at green light, or driving in the parking lot. At first, thought somebody rear ended my car.
Long story short, dealer spent two weeks trying to reproduce the fault with no success (of course), returned the car with empty tank so I barely made it to the gas station.
That was the turning point: moved on to a better quality car!

She has never ever said no to any of my car ideas, I have a virtual carte blanche in anything automotive.
When I hesitate, she says I live only once and to go for it, if I don't like it then just change for something I do like more.

A possibility that is becoming increasingly likely is that any unsold 2021 E63s out there are the last W213 E63s that will be made. Mercedes is cutting production due to supply constraints on chips and parts that require chips. They're focusing on base and volume models that require somewhere between one-half and one-third of the chips needed for top spec cars. Intel, TSMC, and Samsung are all warning that chip supply likely won't meet demand until sometime in 2023. If Mercedes were to start making 2023 AMGs then, there'd only be a couple of months of production before the W214 started and they'll probably just want to go ahead and get the factory retooling done and everything ready for the next-gen E-Class. I may end up being wrong but there's a VERY good chance the AMG W/S213 has/is about to end production for good.
