Risk level of lemon buyback 2018 E63 Wagon?

Been eyeing the w213 E63s as my next daily for a while now (moving from a tuned C43). I did not think I could find a clean wagon in my budget and recently found one in my area that's priced OK, but is not discounted as much as I would have thought once I saw the buyback on its CarFax. Fully optioned with 45k, they're asking $70k. I think $57-60k is more in line. The dealer didn't mention this in the description but it's in the CarFax. Doing a some digging here and talking to the seller, I found it's likely related to all of the misfire codes that people were reporting when the car came out. Its production date is late 2017 so it makes sense.

If I decide to move on this car, how much will the lemon buy back impact the resale price? The dealer's acting like it's no issue with regard to pricing on their end. My assumption is that when I want to let go of this car in 2-3 years, I'll take a big hit on resale value, and that they should discount this a good 10-15%.

I really wanted a wagon for the space (2 dogs and intent to start a family soon) but I've found sedans with similar mileage, priced lower, without any shady title history.

Are there any lemon issues specific to the wagon or are they the same across the W213 platform? From what I've read, it does not sound wagon-specific, but interested to hear what other people think. Appreciate your input!

2014 E63S; AMS 100 octane ECU dyno tune; EDOK TCU tune; BB intakes; sprintbooster
CEL's and injector programming issues early on were ultimately resolved with software, some with hardware; not wagon specific

also consider RMS leaking and oil separator issues:

Thank you. I’ve read those threads and am not so concerned with the tech issues vs the resale value/prevalence of the issue. Were MOST cars impacted? I know CA, where it originated, have more consumer-friendly buy back laws, so this may have happened there due to legal issues but may not have in other states, for the same reasons.

no data on prevalence. There never is for something like this. Not for the consumer anyways. Good luck.

My 18 wagon did not encounter any misfires, coils problem within the first 3 yrs or so. I did have a failed coils after 4 yrs and a bit and then another coils failed just recently at 5.5 yrs.

If the car had a buyback and has since been operational, it may mean it’s more of a technical issue mb initially failed to resolve promptly. I would suggest to obtain all possible available maintenance records and then have a comprehensive inspection done on the car and you can then decide.

the rms issue may outweigh all other concerns in my opinion.

in canada, the wagon is listing at around $85-95k cdn or $63-70k US equivalent. Therefore, the seller there is asking the upper range for sure.

Appreciate the reply. Thank you. Coils after a few years sounds normal. Will be getting records tomorrow!

Did you consider the sedan before the wagon? From what I can read here, they both seem equivalent re mechanical reliability.

wagon is what i want from the early point on. Wagon meets my needs of being very versatile and extremely rare and somewhat difficult to buy one in my region. I have seen only a handful of wagons since they came out back in fall 2017.

here in canada, the sedan version is pretty common and i do see them on a weekly basis. 😄

it’s unfortunate i have to give up my wagon as the costs of repairs just kept mounting up since my warranty expired. Air suspension, Rms, cv shafts and replacements of full brakes really hit me hard. I can’t say this is what you will be looking at for owning it but you should have a rainy days funds for the costly repairs and maintenance

appreciate this again - out of warranty maintenance was another concern. I was about to buy a new & warrantied Defender for a DD @ same price, saw the E63 and came to my senses about buying an SUV lol

there is a sponsor here who sells extended warranty (non factory). I suppose you should keep that in mind (for a bit of peace of mind)

If resale value is your concern I'd shy away simply because the majority of people who'd buy these types of cars will check history, see lemon buyback, and move on. I know I would. If you know you're keeping the car for a long time then it becomes less of a concern but if you're going for a lemon because you're already stretching your budget or the possibility of wanting/needing to sell near term for whatever reason is there I would say you're setting yourself up for disaster but that's just my opinion.

While I always prefer factory warranties, I can personally attest to Fidelity’s coverage. I opted for a platinum policy on a previously owned AMG, and would say it was very good. In my experience claims were handled-approved over the phone with quick phone call from my dealer’s service advisor to Fidelity. I would imagine for very large claim amounts, they may opt to send an independent inspector to verify, but claims in the 1.5- 2K range were approved via the above in my experience.

If it's any consolation, the M177 has yet to show signs of total grenading. The misfires and RMS/vapor separator issues, while expensive with dealer labor, are ultimately fixable.

Not the case with M274 piston cracking and M278/M157 bore scoring.

Another couple of years without grenade behavior and the M177 might earn a stripe on the sleeve for medium-term reliability. Here's hoping.

wagons always demand a premium on price above sedans. in good condition, i still see them going for more than you are showing.

Don’t let the sales guy convince you otherwise - the buyback will make it really tough for you to sell the car later and will impact price and really narrow the buyers who’ll buy it. Been there done that, I have a car fax minor and it’s killing deals left right center. I didn’t think it would be a big deal when I bought the car knowing about the car fax minor. But it is. BAT rejected my wagon listing and I’m pretty sure that’s why. Etc. Etc.

And what if they never really fixed the problem?! It was a lemon for a reason.

I’d pass. Save up a little more and buy a clean car. Story cars aren’t worth it.

Your W212 wagon had the engine replaced? What was the reason?

OMG! Thanks for sharing. Now you only have to have an RMS failure in a few years. At least Mercedes stood behind the warranty.

The real issue is this.....

You had to find out on your own. That is absolutely wrong if you chatted with them and they did not mention the buyback. Not illegal, but certainly not good business.
And yes having had both 212 and 213, the number is way too strong.
Just my .02. Good luck in the hunt.
