Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S: Practical & Silly Fast, CarsGuide

By -

Mercedes-Benz goes bigger and better with its new top-of-the-heap AMG GLC model.

When CarsGuide’s Peter Anderson started out his review of the 2018 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S with, “It’s a turbocharged, V8, 4.0-liter monster” in the above video from the company’s official YouTube pagewe knew this was going to be a fun SUV. We’ve driven a few of Mercedes’ quick SUVs ourselves, and the GLC 63 S definitely falls in that category.

Now, before we go on, you’re not wrong if you thought, “wait a moment, isn’t there already an AMG GLC model?” Yes, the GLC 43. But, in the spirit of bigger and better, Mercedes went from a V6 to a biturbo V8.

Anderson does spend some time going through the interior, and it’s definitely not worth glossing over. The open pore wood is spectacular, the seats are comfortable, and if you’ve gotten used to Mercedes’ COMMAND infotainment system, you’ll even be happy with that. Then, he gets down to the fun parts and asks, “but you’re not here to hear about how nice the open pore wood is, or how much room the kids have, are you? No, you’re here to see what makes this thing boogie.”

One of the big takeaways from his experience is the responsiveness of the GLC, thanks in part to the way they’ve arranged the pair of turbochargers. That 4.0-liter is pumping out 469 horsepower and takes just 3.8 seconds to get the two-ton SUV to 60 mph. The turbos are positioned inside the “V” of the engine. This allows the GLC to spool the turbos much quicker. Anderson explains, “even in race mode, which is what I’m in, it’s nice. But it responds when you decide to have a go.”
