Mercedes-AMG’s Success in Formula One Will Directly Influence Its Future Hypercar

The 2017 Geneva Motor Show proved to be quite the hotbed of hypercar news. Mercedes-Benz announced an update on their elusive hypercar prototype, code-named Project One. And in another hallway of the Palexpo center, Aston Martin announced that deliveries of their Valkyrie hypercar will also happen in late 2018. Coincidence, or ruthless competition?

AMG boss Tobias Moers presented a light rundown of what the future holds for the German high-performance car builder. That includes the extensive use of Formula One-derived technology for road-going vehicles. According to Moers, the Project One hypercar will be powered by a re-worked version of the F1 engine currently found in their AMG-Petronas championship-winning cars. Furthermore, he says the engine could have a redline as high as 11,000 rpm!

In addition to the stratospheric redline, Moers says a pair of electric motors will be mounted on the front axle in order to create a full hybrid system. It could potentially have an EV-only range of around 15 miles. In an interview with MotoringMoers also mentions that each motor could deliver up to 160 horsepower, and would work in conjunction with the turbocharged V6 F1 engine mounted in the rear.

All of that sounds incredible, of course. But Moers admits they’ve yet to face several challenges regarding emissions, packaging, and possible upkeep of an engine so complex. Considering the Project One will have an estimated price of $2.4 million, we doubt future owners will complain too much about servicing their street-legal Formula One racers.
