Simple Mods Make CLS63 AMG a Quarter-mile Monster

By -

With two mods and an afternoon’s worth of work, you can make your CLS63 AMG rocket down the drag strip in the 10 second range.

For a long time we have known that simple ECU flashes can do tremendous things to wake up an AMG motor. With the new run of turbocharged cars, that increase in power is even greater. Take for example this E63 owned my Instagram user nardooo_63. According to this video, a Gintani tune and downpipes are the only mods outlined. We’ll have to take a wild guess at overall power increases, but the Gintani tune alone is worth an additional 127 horsepower and a very stout 240 lb/ft of additional torque.

New Jersey’s Atco Dragway hosts a number of runs from nardooo_63, and we really get to see the results of the mods. While pulling up to the tree, we can see that this car is even running on stock street rubber. Launch control helps get off the line, and then we get to see what this CLS63 is all about. The first few runs are in the very low 11s, then somehow, the car manages to run two identical times. Slips show 10.916 twice, but with vastly different reaction times, and 60-foot times. Yet time lost off the line is made up at the long end of the run.

Of course, if you’re going to show up at the strip, you’ll look to take on a competitor. The driver picks a BMW M5 and a McLaren 570S to line up against. The BMW has the same mods as the AMG with a tune and new downpipes. Put the bench racing aside, because real numbers on the track tell the truth. “Nardooo_63’s”AMG had the run of the BMW on all three passes. Two, low 11-second passes, and a 10.91 at 129 miles per hour put three wins in the bag.

Next up was a McLaren 570S. Here’s where the supercar had the upper hand, but it is still humbling that a world-class supercar is only moderately faster than a four-door sedan. The McLaren blitzed the half-mile in 9.9 seconds at 141 miles per hour. Mods done to the McLaren? Nothing disclosed. They are simply that fast. From a speed per dollar standpoint, we’ll applaud the AMG for a valiant effort.
