Aftermarket HID Conversion Kits & required setting XENON=PRESENT thread
#1752
Sorry for the delayed response, I was out to lunch. I just ordered the fogs. Seems I got the bug! I swore after I traded my ridiculously modded Jetta in for this W211 that I would leave it alone. That's workin out real well...
The city lights I got off of Ebay from this guy http://myworld.ebay.com/ebaymotors/easylife_go/ here http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWNX:IT
The license plate lights I got off of Ebay from this guy http://myworld.ebay.com/ebaymotors/goodstuffs4u0904/ (best price, most were $75+, these were $32 shipped. Here is the auction link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWNX:IT
So far both of these guys have had great communication, and both items are shipped, so hopefully I can post some pics next week.

thanks for the tips!
first off, i want to say i drive a C230, so i'm not sure if our lights will be exactly the same. then again they may be.
my city light LEDs look just like the ones you ordered. having said that, i hope you have no problems with yours, with the resistors. -before i got the pair i have in now, the pairs i put in before would melt. they were super cheap. i took them back 3 times before demanding a refund and getting new ones elsewhere.
the ones that melted had these huge heat sinks on the resistors. they were big *** metal bars. the pair that i have now had very small resistors. they work great.
i wish i had more info for you on that but the shop that installed them did all the ordering. & i admittedly am not an expert when it comes to vehicle lighting.
thanks for the license plate light link. please tell me how you like them when you get them!
i was going to order these ones:
www.hoen-usa.com/licenseplate.htm
i emailed the guy at that company & he said they'd work just fine in my car & without any errors.
hmm. these are incandescent, and yours are LEDs... i'm guessing the LEDs will be brighter? i may get the ones like you have.
one last question: where did you get $65 HIDs? mine were like $200..
-& i hear you on the mods. i used to have a volvo S40 & i always wanted to put fat rims & a body kit on it. when i got my silver 07 w203 (c230) it had the sport body kit & nice enough sport rims, but was lacking in the sound system & the lights. i put about $2300 into the system and the lights, but it was worth it. i have a pioneer x910 nav/bluetooth/ipod system that looks like it was made for the car, and an alpine amp & 10" JL sub. i seriously have one of the best sounding car audio systems i've ever heard. then the HID lights really add to the car. they make it look more timeless & expensive. especially with the iridium silver paint. i've a friend & she has a red c230. same as mine except without the extras i added. the 2 cars seem like night & day. our wheels are the same but they look better with the silver paint. having a red car, or even a white car, i think a chrome rim would look nicer. ok, i'm starting to sound like my dad so i'll stop now. :-x

I got the HIDS's from this guy on Ebay http://myworld.ebay.com/dealtime321/. He stocks all bulb sizes. I am not sure about the quality of the balasts, as they are Japanese. But the filaments were in good shape/good looking, the wiring was good looking, and the balasts are 35W digital, supposedly waterproof, vibrationproof. I figured for $65 you cant go wrong. If they do crap out I will start the hunt for Phillips or Siemens kits.

The reason I ordered 10000k is cause I like the blue, but people say when ordering from DDM, always go one up. If you want if you want 6000k, get 8000k, if you want 8000k, get 10000k.

try the ddm error cancellers or just go to a dealer and get xenon=present setting

You go "up one" if you're going 55w because (supposedly) the added wattage washes out some color. So a 6000k 55w will look like a 5000k 35w. I have 6000k 55w DDM and I think it might be slightly blue for my tastes. I have a lifetime warranty and the next time a bulb gives me a problem and I have to send it off, I'm going to ask if it would be possible to step down to 5000k since they replace even one faulty bulb with a pair.
Your 10000k HIDs are going to be virtually useless. It's going to look horrendously tacky and the color is going to make it likely worse than halogens in inclement weather.
Again, I don't understand the thought process behind ridiculous Kelvin ratings on HIDs. If HIDs were installed in cars because they increase usable light (lumens), what exactly is the point of a HID system that has no real advantage?
Blue lighting has its place.. on the Police Interceptor. It should begin and end there.

Can I just order new bulbs, and will the ballasts work on the new bulbs?

For DDM tuning you shouldn't even need the error cancellers.

HID Cheapo Conversion
Three months down so far with about 15k miles. Love my HID lows and fogs. Note that on cold days where the fogs have not previously been running, I occasionally see a right fog light out message before I start the car. Press the reset button briefly and away I go (the message pops up due to the delay in gas charge activation in a cold state), with no further messages. Also note, the ebay error free city lights match and look awesome!

The colour temperature of sunlight with atmospheric effect is approx 5778 Kelvin. For best illumination you should be as close to this as possible.

As a word of caution to anyone reading, the "will I need eliminators or not" question is not one any of us can answer. I did not need them, my 55w have worked fine without eliminators or xenon=present settings. But others have bought the same exact kit for the same exact car and had errors. It's random, hit-or-miss. For $20, I'd just go ahead and buy them rather than having to make two orders if you get errors. I am inclined to say you are less likely to get errors from 55w than 35w, but I have no proof of this.

You are definitely less likely to get errors from 55w than 35w. It's closer in draw to the tolerance set.
