M271 Oil Filter Question...

I've read that the text on the oil filter gets installed facing down (so if you removed it you can see the part number without sliding the filter out) but when I first removed mine it had the text facing up. Which is the correct way and will it make a difference if its upside down? Any input is appreciated, Thanks

Just my 2 cents. I have never heard this about the filter installation. I examined a filter that I have here at the house and it seems very symmetrical. I have never had any concern when doing my oil changes. I would say that there is no orientation issues when installing the filter, it can be installed in any direction. I have never worried about it and hope it does not come back to haunt me.

It makes no difference. The filter media - Polyester fleece, is uniform - the filter is symetrical - no orientation.

Just wondering, but anyone out there with a M271 fleece filter? If so, what's the part #?

I am showing a Mercedes part number of A 271 180 00 09 for the oil filter element for the M271 engine.

That is the Mann + Hummel Merc Genuine fleece part number - the fleece filter is white - see pic above.

There is a yellow paper filter PN 271-180-01-09. Stay away from that - also made in Germany, but by Hengst

See page 11 of service products posted below. There is a lot of crap all over the place where people have confused these two numbers & I suspect that some dealers do this on purpose so they can give you paper & charge for fleece - be careful

^Thanks for the clarification. Does using that fleece filter increase your service interval to 20000km? My understanding is that the paper filter is 15000km.

Also, what year is your car?

The filter I have at home is part number A 271 180 01 09 and it is the yellow paper filter. I buy my filters at the dealer. I have asked about fleece filter before and they always say it is the only filter that is called for.

Now my car is an '05 and this is probably the only one for this car. I always run the 13K service interval and I was told by dealer that that filter is fine. Who knows?

dnlow, just to clarify.. is this correct? you're using the PAPER filter to run 13000 miles?

In Canada, the only filter i know of is the paper filter, which lasts 15000km (just under 10000 miles), and what I have been using since Day 1. Rumour has it that a Fleece filter in the M271 can extend this interval to 20000km (or 13000 miles). I am curious to know if this is the case.

If you or Glyn M Ruck can chime in, it'd be great.

Yes, 20,000KM or 13,000 miles with the fleece. In South Africa we run 15,000 Kms with the fleece because we are classified as a "torrid" zone by Merc. I have seen no mileage recommendation anywhere for the paper filter.

My car is a late 2003 C240 2.6 V6

It takes

Mann+Hummel = Part no. 18-095 which is a Mann HU718/5X
MB Genuine = MA000 180 26 09

The paper filter is quite unacceptable for 13,000 miles. Tell the dealer to take that crap out of your car & do a free oil change.

Oh wait, Glyn you have a V6 M272 engine. Yes, the fleece exists for that one.

Anyone know if the fleece filter exists for the M271 (inline 4, or C180/200/230 kompressor) engine?

Mann + Hummel & Mercedes did a joint development on the fleece filter along with 229.5 engine oils to achieve the long drain capability. No paper filter can do this. You need a synthetic media filter with synthetic oil to achieve this.

Slammer, Yes - the number alpinweiss gave you is for the M271 - Read page 11 of the service products pdf I've attached. Those are all the fleece part numbers for the different engines.

BTW - The paper filter is not even imported into South Africa. The fleece filter is the only one available at the insistence of MBSA - wisely so, seeing all the high temperature endurance testing is done here and in Namibia for MB AG.

I just went to my dealer looking for the filter for my 05 230k. He brought out part #271 180 01 09. It was the paper filter. I told him I was looking for the fleece filter. According to him, that part number he had superseded 271 180 00 09, which was the part number I was looking for. I went around the the service dept., and they said they use the paper filter, because that is what Mercedes says. I showed them the sticker under the hood, that said fleece filter only, and they said the paper one is the right part. I checked another dealer, and he said the same thing. I'm confused.

I'll second that. I also have an 05 C230, bought my filter from the dealer, and that was the only one they stocked (or that was available for my engine, so they said). If there is a fleece that is available, I'd definitely rather run that.

I'm not surprised you are confused - USA dealers sing a different tune to ones here - Mercedes still says fleece only for extended drain in all their published data & the "Silver book" listing which is now on CD or internet if you are an oil company & have access.

Maybe we must get mleskovar to do some sleuthing as to what's going on in the US. Saprissa can always check what the practice is in Germany now that he is back in Stuttgart. My car is staying on fleece until someone can prove to me that the other filter can do the job. Maybe it is not paper but controlled synthetic media - who knows?

Look at this thread. This is why I will not mess around

I will keep working on finding the fleece filter, but I think for '05 it may not be available any more.

Just wanted to chime in with Benzben and Jeff W. I'm ~5,000 miles into my last oil change and I the oil filter they gave me was part number A 271 180 01 09. However, the material was the synthetic fleece (the filter in my car before this most recent oil change was actually the Hengst paper filter). Seems like there's a lot of inconsistency with the oil filters and their respective part numbers.

This is really important - if you have the FSS system in your vehicle - (05 has it!) and you are changing the oil when it says (around 13k miles) you ABSOLUTELY MUST use the fleece filter and the proper spec oil. The dealers here are ALWAYS either incorrect or flat out lying! DO NOT use the paper filter even if the scum bags tell you that it is correct and is the only filter they have - this is wrong and can very easily damage your engine. I've heard of them (the paper media) actually breaking up into the engine when used for so many miles this can seriously damage your engine, enough to total it.

Again, NEVER trust your dealer. NEVER. I know from all too much experience. They lie and install sub standard filters. They also lie and use the wrong weight oil, or the wrong oil all together. Just because it says Mobile 1 does NOT mean it meets the very important MB spec. It has to be a specific Mobile 1.

This whole situation is worrying & needs to be resolved for the sake of peoples peace of mind & engines. I posted the paper filter disintegration thread above.

Until we have resolved there is only one way to go.

M+H Fleece filter & Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40 (Euro formulation) meeting 229.5

I have PMed mleskovar to get involved & try and find out what is going on on your side of the pond. If necessary we will get splinter, Moviela, Saprissa & Johnand involved
