As you say its not really difficult. Preparation and a steady hand are important, also best to remove lights and lay flat to ensure even coats. Masking up each light took about ten minutes, spraying 2 coats of transparent black 30 mins (15 mins between coats) left for 24 hrs then 2 coats of clear lacquer 20 mins. As it was a hot day in UK laid paper on front seats placed in lights and left in locked car all day ala - my own oven which set the lacquer hard.

Not sure. The number of coats applied determines the darkness of the tint hence, i only applied 2 coats anymore and they would have been too dark. I believe that you can get higher watt bulbs. Other than that its a wetsand too get the desired look.

I know in Ohio when brake is applied a red brake light just has to be visible, regardless of the color of the actual taillight.

Thats looks...pardon the pun...
SMOKIN"!

As far legality, on the coupe, luckily the brake light is seperate on top
behind the clear. I didn't tint that on mine.

And due to sun exposure in the course of just 1 year they're now a
nice dark red...at least they're not pink!
And yes, I used the VHT Nite shades. But my car is parked outside.

I think it's possible, if you were rear ended and your brake lights were tinted out, a lawyer could make a case for the idiot that hit you, but I'm not an attorney. The law in Cali states they must be red and reflective.

your smoked lights

what's the downside to tinting your rear lights with film, rather than spraying at the shop. 1) if i tint my lights, I'm not sure how long I will like the look.
2)spraying seems permanent?
does the film hold up well? is it easy to remove?

I sprayed mine 2 coats followed by 2 coats of clear lacquer, and brought a 2nd pair from a scrap vehicle involved in an accident just in case i wanted to change back.

Make darn sure you use automotive grade supplies and follow all of the automotive "codes" to paint application - IE - NO OILS from your hands, etc...I bake my work in a hot box at 140 for 35 minutes to smooth out the flow and set the clear.

I use all Du Pont or PPG stuff and SATA spray guns...

It is an oven that runs on a timer and can have large automotive (or other) parts put into it to bake the clear and run out any potential orange peel and gain a smoother finish...

Nice stuff,

How to Polish Sprayed Smoked S Class Tail Lights?

I just traded my 7 Pin eagle eyes taillights for an 6 Pin that was tinted. I have a 2004 C230 Sport Sedan........The taillights were sprayed on and there is no shine or gloss to them.
- I am wondering what can I use to shine them up? use a clear coat or something? I want to get them to shine abit more they are so dull......

Any advice would be helpful.....also if you know about the "Rear Light Bulb error messages" I get when I plug them in please reply on the other forum.

Thanks,

LED Taillight installed..."Rear fog lightbulb error messages"

I just traded for a 6 pin Eagle Eyes S Class taillights that have been smoked. Now when I pluged them into my 2004 C230 Sport Sedan there was two ERROR MESSAGESS!!!!

"Rear Fog Light Bulb Error"

and

"Rear Light Bulb error problem" or something like that (already took them off)

I need to know what the problem is, I traded them because they have the 6 pin female connector that fits my 2004 C 230 Sedan. I didn't want to cut or rewire anything. So now I am confussed, I know I can prob take them to the shop and get my mechanic to cancel the error message but then I am wondering if everytime I start the car will there be the two error message?

Any advice or info would help out alot,

Thanks Guys,

Cheers

The 6-pin S-class lights won't isn't wired for the rear fog light. Try disconnecting & reconnecting the connector. Typically goes away by the next time you start up the car. Just don't turn the light switch to where it activates the rear-fog and the warning won't come back.

What is everyone using to “Spray Tint” their lenses and any other part? Anything off the “shelf” at AUTOZONE will not cut it…Those paints – no matter what they say are not made for weather and sun – and have not the qualities you are looking for when applying them to a lens. They will fade, peel, dull and look like junk in a short while – and give a bad name to a spray tint job.

Also – how is everyone starting this project? Any and all oils and imperfections on the surface will always come through and ruin your finish.

I read a lot of people ******* the spray process and say go for film – I have nothing against film as I have never used it and most likely never will. I am just wondering how everyone goes about this – if you don’t have the proper equipment to do this

IE –
Gloves
Compressor
Air driers
Spray guns
Pre Cleaners
Scotch Brite
Wax Strippers
Final Cleaners
Tack Cloths
Plastic Preps
Automotive Top Coats
Spray Booth
Baking Box
Etc

Thank in my humble opinion this is NOT a DIY…

Just curious…
Jake

(The tinted red area and stock white – looks best in my opinion)

Thanks,
I don't know if putting clearcoat on there after its been like that for a while is the best idea. Sounds like it wasn't done right from the get go.

I appreciate the replys.....but if I did want to try and shine them up what clear coat should I use? Or should I just take them to a body shop and see what they can do?

I would rather do it myself, I have a buffer and garage I just want to get them more glossy before I install them again.....

Error Messages

Sorry I don't understand your answer, When I pull the light switch in the interior of the car and pull it to the right the front fog lights on the bumper come on....At the same time the one rear fog light on the left taillight comes on at the same time...

Is there a way to only activate the front fog lights? and I also tried turning the car off and on and the error messages came on again....Plus the bulb is working so I don't think its the bulb that is broken or at fault....but then again who knows......

You can try the clearcoat. Dupli-color is a decent brand. Watch out with the buffer though, it can make the plastic get hot and melt if you hold it still for too long.

You tinted your CHMSL - Or Third Brake Light??!? - I would not do that for safety, insurance, police, consideration of sharing the road - etc...

I would tint down your front DOT side markers and the mirror light...just a tad.

clear coat for tail lights

I wanted to smoke my tails out using VHT Nite Shades....which clear coat should I use, everything i looked at isnt ment for plastic...which is what all my stuff is.

I bought some clear Dupli Color Acrylic Enamel...but the guy said it will ONLY protect the paint...not give it gloss, any suggestions?

Do I got the right stuff, or shuld i get something else?
