What was the problem? I have Bose, teleaid, and cd changer and the install was plug and play

They did that because for parts standardization purposes, going to the MOST system. It seems like a lot of changes but for Benz in the long run it's cheaper to manufacture.

By the way, you can use an 05 mirror on a pre 05 car, it's just that you have to remove the plug housing on the mirror, select the proper two pins and put them into the plug housing from the old "donor" mirror. The difference is that the 05 mirror has four mics and the control unit uses whichever has the best signal. You have just to pick one and hope for the best. I did this to my car and it works fine.

look at the slats on the mic in your 04. They should be facing the driver

If you have a CD changer there is a possibility that you may have to rewire your fiber optic network. I had two seperate optical plugs (1 for phone and 1 for CD changer) behind my Comand Nav.

Since there is only one input into Nav/Head unit you will need a fiberoptic loop to daisy chain between your phone sys and nav/head unit, I transplanted the extra one (the one you don't use in Peleli's pics) into the dash, pulled out my cd changer and plugged the transplanted optical fiber into the back of it.

Took an extra half-hour but well worth it. Hope this helps someone.

How do inbound calls work? Let's say you are listening to the Radio or CD, and the call comes in... Is the music muted so you can hear the inbound ring? How do you pick up the call?

Hi, I was looking at some C class vehicles on the weekend, ranging from 2001-2003.

They all have the phone mount (or whatever you call it) on the centre console. They also have that squiggly cable hanging out of it.

The dealer told me that all I need is a cradle for my particular phone from Mercedes and that it will cost $200. (Aus dollars in this case)

Is this true? It doesnt seem to gel with a lot of info Ive read about phone systems, installation etc. For example, I keep reading that you need a UHI kit. Is this it? Or something else?

I believe all Mercedes come prewired for telephone... but a kit (which you are referring to) that comes with a cradle in the center console is also needed... You seem to already have that pricey item, so simply exchanging out that phone mount for one that will fit your phone will work for you. I'm 99% sure... Anyone else want to back me up?

He is from Australia and those cars do not come prewired usually. Those cars are also equipped with phone cradles on the dash at times. Any car 2001-2006 C can be retrofitted with a UHI system. The UHI system is the new universal system which will allow you to use various cradles to accomidate various phones.

Thanks Guys. Im thinking about going with the Argos bluetooth solution, as it seems cheaper than doing a UHI retrofit from what I can gather.

Ahh, glad someone else chimed in then ;-)... didn't notice you were from Australia.... As for the Argos - I've heard very good things, and since your lookin in the 01-03 range you'll be fine with it. Its the 05/06 models that can't use the Argos bluetooth kit *yet*... but the second and I mean "second" it becomes available -- ;-)...

Right, in the UK and Europe, you actually have to pay extra for the pre-wiring so I'd assume it's the same for Australia.

I'm not sure this applies to the Australian market, but I think the most economical option is to get the "Hands free kit" and get a bluetooth adapter. The Handsfree kit gives you a small plug in under the armrest. You use a bluetooth adapter to plug it in, and voila, your phone (once paired to the bluetooth adapter) will work.

I've even contemplated this extra on my car but then I thought that I'd be talking too much. However, it is a pain for me when people call me, it's very difficult to get my hands into my pockets while driving.

Thanks guys. Im still shopping for my car, but pretty much every single one I look at (except for early 2000 models) has an existing phone cradle on the center console.

I assume then that the phone wiring has to be in place. I was reading about the Argos solution, and all you have to do is unplug the old "tel" connection. (more or less)

Ive been given some pretty steep quotes for the UHI kit, the Argos will let me get a fully integrated phone system into the car at roughly 30% less than UHI.

It will also let me pair my wifes phone as well, and we wont have to worry about purchasing seperate cradles for each phone/upgraded phone.

I've got 2001 C180 and yes, the phone Nokia ?5110 something and few other old nokias should be ready to go, Australia here by the way

So Scott, how does the Argos solution work? I've got a sony ericcsson with Three, got blue tooth in it.
I asked Mercedes dealer about it and they just shocked me with $1500 or more so I just went away.

Hi Ayman, its a module of some sort that plugs into the wiring of the car. As its bluetooth, you dont need any cradles for various models of phones. It will also pick up your phone, even if you left it in the boot or something.

Including information on the install itself. It looks pretty straightforward. Its a little pricey (just over $1000 Aussie dollars) but its stil cheaper than the quotes Ive been given for UHI and other options. More flexible too.

That's what I like about it, the flexibility. However, still, I rarely need to use the phone and with the phone in the car, that means my phone bill might go up.

I'll get it on my next car, but I'll pass with this one.

$1000! That sorted the issue for me. There are some really nice hands free bluetooth at Dick Smith for $150 or even less. I don't think spending $1000 on a used car is an economical idea.
