Can anyone help with M271 question?

I have a 2003 C230K with approx. 42,000 miles that I have had for about 4 months. In the mornings, when I start the car, it idles rough. But only when in reverse or drive, not when I am in park. About a month ago, my CEL came on and the reader at Autozone says it is "Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Bank B". So I bought a new camshaft position sensor and replaced it. However, I noticed the wiring harness that attaches to the position sensor is covered in oil. Is this normal? Also, should the CEL go off on it's own once the problem is fixed, or will I have to have it cleared?

Oh boy... Sounds like the Leaky Cam sensors campaign may not have been performed on your vehicle.

Here's the thread where you should be able to find the answer to your cam sensors and oil leak.

and some Pics of the problem (post #187)

You're going to have to get that corrected ASAP. It might be expensive, too - sorry. But it can and will cause a whole slew of issues (as you see, they are starting). The cam position sensors leak oil into the wiring harness.

I read about the camshaft solenoids and my car has had the recall work done to it. I am talking about the camshaft position sensor.

Oil in wiring harness is definitely not normal...it might a residual oil from leaky cam before they did the recall.

Do you have isolating wires?

Are you talking about the cam pos sensor on the side of the head or front of engine?

It is on the side of the engine. You don't even have to remove the engine cover to get to it. Today my CEL is off, but it still had a rough vibration when I first started it this morning...

The isolating wires have been installed as a part of the recall to the front of the engine which is what all of the threads on here have pictures of.
