Bi-Xenon install vs factory

I have been to two dealers in the are looking to purchase a 2005 C230. Problem is I am having trouble finding one that has both the entertainment package and bi-xenon (not too hard to find a car that is fully loaded but I don't want to pay for things like seat heaters).

I found two cars that I like that have everything but bix. I know it is possible for $1000 or so and a helpful service advisor you can install bix yourself. It looks like there are two disadvantages to that vs having them installed from the factory.
  • You won't have auto leveling due to the sensors not being present.

Does this make a difference after the initial leveling done when the headlamps are installed? I guess I am confused as to what this function do if the lights are leveled from the start.

  • You won't have the headlamp washing system.

Does anyone that have this ever use it? Ive never had this on any car and I have never thought "Wow if I had headlamp washers I would use it now!"
I may have the option of getting a car w/out the entertainment package and substitute bix instead. This is something I might consider as I think bix looks awsome... but at the same time I would probably miss the nicer stereo...

i have BIX from factory. i ordered my car this way. the headlamp washers arent neccessary but the look of the doors i neat IMO. also auto leveling is a cool feature. they not only auto level when you turn on the car, but they level while you are driving.

The autoleveling and headlamp washers are european requirements and are not required in the U.S. Personally I wouldn't care as autoleveling is more to protect others from you blinding them, the headlamp washers are great if you want soap sprayed on your fenders and hood, don't know if they actually do clean the headlamps.

Headlamp washers are retarded in my opinion. The only time this might ever be useful is if you are off-roading at dusk or at night and a huge glob of mud slops onto your headlight, blocking all light from escaping. It might be useful then.

Otherwise, under normal circumstances if your headlamp lenses are dirty, just wait until you get home and WIPE THEM WITH A TOWEL. You'll save yourself (as Bwinkle said) from getting washer fluid all over your hood which you'll just have to clean up again later.

actually they dont clean the lights at all IMO. they leave soapy water all over them, there are no wipers to remove the soap, there is overspray all over the hood and the interior will smell like soap. i just like the look of the doors, i dont use the washers.

the way i see it though, it is cheaper to get them from factory than it is to retrofit. you get more features, retarded or not, for a cheaper price. that doesnt sound too retarded to me.

True. I'm just saying you don't have to cry if you don't get the washers because you retrofit later.

where i live the headlamp washers will be useful in the winter when they throw salt ot dirt on the roads when it snows. when all that salt and dirt dries on the headlamps, they really cut down the brightness. i just noticed that you dont live in the northeast so i guess you dont have to worry about snow in texas

I thought that my cleaners were messed up or not calibrated. It's good to know that that's actually the design...

I actually tried to use them today and tried to take a video of it. What I got--a hood full of soap that I had to rinse off...

lol, exactly ^_^ when i picked up my car, the salesman told me, "you'll *NEVER* need to use this, but these are the headlight washers. They're good for cleaning the lights in winter..." so far, I've used it twice, just to show ppl, and always had a hose/chamois handy for cleanup

:edit:
oh, the other good reason for factory BIX, at least in the retarded state of hawaii, is because they're legal if that's the way your car left the factory. any installs post-sale, no matter their OEM-ness, is technically illegal, and you can get ticketed for it, or fail the yearly safety check if the inspector is a *****/calls you on your lie (not having the washers is a sure indicator to the savvy inspector) so when I ordered the car, BIX were a *must*

I dont think the auto leveling feature really works except for at startup. When I pull my car into my driveway (which is on an incline) the headlights dont adjust or move at all. Same thing for over speedbumps...nothing

i dont know, maybe im seeing things then. sometimes it seems like my headlights are adjusting while i drive. i was asked by two people before as well. when you pull in an incline such as my drive way, the lights wont shine to the ground because they are re-adjusting, its more for like load leveling and when the car bounces while it drives it levels i believe.

If you're buying a new car, and you can't find what you want then do a factory order and get the car exactly how you want it. You're paying, so make yourself happy and get what you want.

The auto level sensors are on the sway bars. They only level when driving if you hit a bump or turn hard enough to get the sways to move enough to require level changes. You will not notice if it is missing!

As for the washers. I use mine quite a bit, but I do not use the soapy MB fluid so it is fine with me. Most of the time I use them in the rain and not when the car is dry. I had to switch fluids though form the nice Rain-X to normal since it leaves Rain-X on the hood and I do not like that. I use them mostly in the winter time or when the front is dirty and it is raining. They are heated and blast the dirt off nicely on mine. Also blast off snow in the winter time and the grime from the road and salt. But in the south and warmer climates they are more for show I would say. They don't do much if you are not moving, since they blast and have no wipers. Although they are less messy when you are not moving. I use mine, but then again I use my heated seats a ton to.

The washing system isnt that special ..... but the self levelling is a decent safety option.

It works on travel load not road bumps. If there is a car full of people it works for sure.

f00b4r,

There's a very important feature that you left out of buying the factor BIX...

THE WARRANTY If you buy aftermarket you're basically on your own. If you buy the originals, you're looking at $1,200-$1,500 installed and programmed vs. a $790 factory option that had the levelers, washers, no dismantling and a WARRANTY.

Just my $.02 (or whatever the current inflation value is)
