broken axle

so i was doin some drifting and coming out of one, i lost control and slammed into the curb, ran over the curb, hit 8 metal poles that are about 5 ft. tall, and then freaked out. When i got out of my car, it seemed ok except the 1 inch gashes along the fron of the car. So i got in the car and headed home (at about midnight) and when i got the car above 30 it just jumped and lost all control. I got out, and saw that my front right tire was completely sideays. i looked closer and saw a piece of metal hanging down. I know it is not the axle, but i dont know what it is. the piece runs from the tire to a point under the car, but is separate from the axle. anyways, it is broken i two. I called the police as i wasnt smart enough to call mercedes roadside, and it took them about 4 hours to get the car on the truck because of the way it was positioned. all in all it was a pretty bad day. i had the tow company take the car to the dealership today, and am waiting on an estimate. does anyone know how much it would be, and what that thing that broke is called. thanks.

You probably broke a control arm. This could get costly.

you hit 8 metal poles and the only thing that happened was a 1 inch gash?

you are looking at prolly somewhere around $3000.
breaking controll arm along doesn't cause wheel to be sideways completely.

sounds like a control arm is not the only thing you are going to need...

I don't know if I'd be sharing this story. It lets people know how much of an idiot you are.
I think you've been watching too many C63 commercials.

ya it was a moment of stupidity. i knew i should have slowed down because my brakes where hot and it was a skinny turn, but i did it anyway.....o well my own mistake.......and the poles where about 4 feet tall and 1-3 inches thick. they where just stuck in the ground to hold up some erosion control, thats why they didnt do much, and i hit them at about 60 so them fu**ers didnt stand a chance

and yes to the c63 commercials lol those are pretty sweet

You are one lucky F###!! Anyway.... dont do it again. If your gona F*** around, make sure you are willing to deal with it. My advice as im sure many will agree, spend time in empty lots and get to know your car.

Good luck and ya it will cost alot, dont know how much but its a Benz so it wont be cheap.

Sucks Man!

I agree with C300Sport….. Big parking lots until you really learn the car. Without a LSD it’s even worse!

As far as the drift police..... I don't care if you do it again or not.... Just not near me would be great….. Track events are pretty cheap and you can learn different techniques.

personally, i would have just signed up for the mercedes drive program they have, that allows u to do that type of defensive driving with THEIR cars, its costy but at least u learn what the cars can do, with their cars, instead of ur own. should be on the website, check into, of course after u get urs fixed. In Germany it runs about 800 euro for, a 2 day run. here is the link for those that live in Germany and interested.

Sorry to hear it. Happened to another friend of mine, going 65 around a 25 mph turn. Hit the curb, and both right side wheels, front and back, were sideways.

So, this is probably a totaled car. Okay, now I'm mildly concerned. What is it about that weld that breaks versus folds over? I'm going to have to assume that the way you hit (post, curb, etc.) is something Mercedes engineers simply ignored when they built the safety cage. I suspect the force vector you experienced is so unusual that the design just ignored it.

Or, alternatively, there is a manufacturing defect and the car should not have broken, but rather folded up. If this is true, you should not pay a dime to get it repaired (even if your driving skills need some fine tuning!).

OTOH, you walked away, the car didn't roll, and you live to pay the piper for the cost! Cool.
