Question Should I try Royal Purple oil???

I been reading a bunch of threads on this and boy there are conflicting info on all oils our car uses even Mobil1 so people with good or bad reasons for RP oils or any other please say so cause I'd like to do my oil change in the next week myself. I already ordered the oil extractor by Harbor Frieght for $25. I can get the Mobil1 5W40 for $6.50 and OEM oil filter for $20 at my local MB dealer who says they have alot on the shelves of both. If anyone has a better recommendation for oil filter please specify a link also. I know there is a ton to read but alot is scattered so maybe all can be posted here. Try to include part# if possible.

TIA

I use the below from mercedesshop.com and think it's around 17.16. I usually buy two so I never have to wait with one always on hand.

MANN-FILTER A6002-132846

I use MobilOne Synthetic 0w40 and no problems with current car or past
MB vehicles. Top side extractor works great.

Whats in the new Mobil oil? Sorry ive been out of the forums for awhile. Last oil i used was Mobil 1 0w40 as i couldnt find the 5w40 on shelves.

Autozone has the fleece MANN filter repackaged in a STP box, it says MANN right on the filter though. It costs about $10.

Mobil 1 0w40 has been the only recommended oil, by MB for many years. It is the one oil they give the 229.5 certification to.

Looks like you accidently used the propper oil last time.

Look at the back for the 229.5 certification. I doubt you'll find it on the 5w40.

Not true... there are many oils on the MB approved oils list. Mobil 1 0w40 happens to be one of them, and IIRC is the factory-fill oil for most (if not all) MB's and AMG's. There was some discussion awhile back that MB was changing the factory (and dealer stocked) oil to a Mobil 1 5w40... I'm not sure if that ever occurred, or if it was nationwide, however.

The oil issue has been absolutely beaten to death, but most tend to believe that using a high quality synthetic in the correct viscosity range, changed over regular and frequent intervals, won't ever be a cause for concern. RP is widely regarded to be an ultra-premium synthetic, and many claim it's the best synthetic money can buy. They also have fairly recently created a 5w40 version for engines (such as ours) that use this viscosity.

The only downside, as MRAMG1 noted, is the cost - I think the cheapest I've seen RP 5w40 is ~$10 per quart; Mobil 1 0w40 can be purchased for significantly less.

I want to personally thank you guys for your input thus far...I am still kind of confused but still leaning more to the cheaper Mobil1 which my local MB dealer said 5W40 is the current version used for MBs instead of 0W40...but I may try RP once to see if engine runs smoother not for the HP claims.

Just poured in a fresh batch of Royal Purple 5W-30. Fuel economy went up a tad and the car pulled great. With regard to which weight to use, consult this pamphlet in the owner's binder that came with the car. It will list the temperature range for which certain oils can be used. Since I almost never see temperature above 90 degrees or below -10, 5W-30 will work fine.

I started using RP several years ago after having always used Mobile 1. It's now the only oil I put in my cars. My SRT ran noticeably smoother and got better gas mileage with RP. I also noticed a slight ticking sound with Mobile 1 that I never got with RP. It's worth the extra money for the peace of mind.

If you want some good reading, there was a dyno comparison between all of the leading synthetics.

Gentlemen:

The BIG debate is/was that Mobil 1 reduced their phosphorous levels, in PPM. Note: This was a US LAW requirement so ALL oils sold in the US now have this reduced phosphorous level due to the requirment of Catalitic convertors clogging on HIGH levels. Anyway, ALL oils have been reduced that are sold in the US. Run whatever synthetic you like, I have been using Mobil 1 for over 20 years now, and my ex crew chief worked at a local research comapany, OIL research that is. After all his tests, Mobil 1 was JUST as good, or better than ALL the other brands. Did I mention that it is ALOT cheaper

Oh yeah, some other brands were a tad better in high temperature breakdown issues, however we are talking about 5 degrees here. REAL world results NO DIFFERENCE, IE 535 vs 540 farenheit.

Oh well, I will be staying with Mobil 1, suit yourself, after all its your money.

See yeah

try Liqui Moly 0w-40 if you gonna try something new.

I've switched between Liqui Moly and Mobil1. Liqui Moly was better, but went back to Mobil1 recently because it's cheaper. lol

Oreilly auto parts runs specials on RP from time to time. I purchased 5 quarts RP 5w30 with a wix oil filter for $35.00.

To your point, M1 0w40 is somewhat cheaper and easy to find. The M1 products was also on the short list of recommended oils for my B6 S4.

The cheapest RP I found was at Club RSX, $76 for a case of 12 with free 2 day shipping. Previously ran AMSOIL but that has become pricey and I was also curious to give RP a try.

I want to say to you and others I really appreaciate that you guys posted on this thread. I know you very knowledgable guys posted on similar threads but was hoping you guys come here also...I still haven't fully decided yet and no mater what I chose it has to be atleast a 40. Because I am ordering online since I am not in a rush well I have time to see if one or the other is cheaper. I am not looking to spend a ton for a DIY oil change so cost effective is priority.

Wow thanks I am really into getting the best bang for the buck...keep in mind guys I am not thinking RP for the possible extra horse they claim.
