NEVER TELL ME YOU CAN'T....

Greetings all! Back once again to push the limits of your thinking on what is possible with the w202 chassis. For those of you not familiar with me I have been messing around with my car and others around me for a few years now and still going. First mod was the 5.5 n/a in my car. Then came my factory LSD swap from a 190e 16v to ensure all of it was getting to the ground. I grew tired of the power and my mind started to think of something else Which brought about the making of (as far as I am aware of) the first N/A SL55 (completed about a week ago). If I knew how to put in links I would but they are there. This is basically a story of MY CAR up to this point.

April 1 2009: I was looking on ebay and randomly searching for things I then punched in mercedes supercharger. As I was scrolling down I saw this!!! After being told I wasn't going to buy it so stop saying you are by my friends I bid and so it began

April 14: The engine arrived during lunch at my job and I was so happy. I looked it over and made up a list of things I wanted/needed to replace. I intended to replace all seals and gaskets on the engine including the head gaskets.

April 18: I showed up to work and started at 7 in the morning and finished 4 in the evening

April 20: I woke up that morning like every morning and went to the gym close to my job to workout. Feeling good I left for work. The weather had changed to a horrible down pour. Taking the off ramp and going faster than need be I started to hydroplane and ended up in a guard rail

June 2: Finally get my car back a month and a couple of weeks later I only managed to drive home once before the engine came out. During that month of down time I cleaned up the engine and modified the electronic by-pass valve (removed it), modified the S/C inlet to accept the larger 82mm TB.

June 5: The engine came out

June 6: Everything was swapped over fom the N/A to the S/C engined. A few things had to be modified

June 7: Re-pined the entire engine harness to accept the old ECU connectors

June 10: Engine was dropped back in

June 11-29: I have put an aftermarket trans cooler with built in temp switch and fan, relocated the air pump, installed oil cooler, installed heat exchanger with a johnson pump, converted the mechanical fan to an electronic on and randomly worked on it when I had time.

June 30 (yesterday): I pressure tested the coolant and one of the hoses blew off and got everything wet. The radiator is leaking from three punctures caused by the sh#ty aftermarket condensor with huge rivets. That was not going to stop me. Start that baby up!!!!!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdmZZp3AONQ

The squealing is from the coolant on the belts.

Enjoy

Jake

How much you buy the motor & accessories for in order to do the conversion? (if you don't mind me asking). Good luck on the conversion that will be a unique car.

I take it you are running the whole 55K engine on the stock 202 ecu?

My questions are: If you are running the 55k on the stock w202 ecu how are you going to control the bypass valve in from the pipeline to the intercooler. I made a block off plate and it works well.

Secondly is your supercharger going to be on all the time because the w202's ecu does not know how to control the SC clutch.

That brings me to your bypass valve on the side of your surge tank. I didnt have them at first and it chewed up the supercharger. However the bypass valve needs to be routed back to the pipeline if the supercharger is engaged all the time so when the throttle body is closes the blower has something to eat. Otherwise you can shock the supercharger and toast out the bearings.

If this is the case that the supercharger will be engaged all the time you are going to need two bypass valves. One per surge tank. Otherwise one side will have a more of a boost drop off than the other.

My bypass valve setup

MAF sensor: It might save you some time to run your MAF like I did. I tried many locations and my currant intake setup was the best spot for tuning purposes.

something like this:

or this

Good luck with the project it is going to be killer! If you have any questions let me know. If You need help tuning the car I just might have a file that will work for you

Very cool. What are you going to do for tuning? Also is that a fmu on the surge tank or a bypass? I cannot tell from the picture. Should tear it up when you are done.

Thank you all for the comments!

The title is written up like that because of the people that were made aware of what i was going to do said "You can't do that. It's impossile. It wont fit. Your wasting your time. Is it going to run?"

Silence...This was not meant to come off as a cocky write up. Just a story line from start to this point in time. I was not even sure the engine would fit let alone fire up under its own stock ecu. I didn't want to start a thread as soon as I got the engine and down the road it not even work and have such an epic failure on my hands. Imagine this as a thread that started in april but condensed down to one.

Whip,Hooley.....As for tuning the car is currently runnig of the stock ECU. I just wanted to see if it woould fire up with no ecu mapping. I will be ordering an AEM FIC-8 to run along side of the stock ECU. As it stands I only have 4 current codes(egr solenoid..not hooked up, air switch over...not hooked up, T/b...???, and a stored T/b...???)

Whipplem104... That is a Vortech max flow bypass valve

Hooleyboy...The bypass is recirculating back into the lower part of the S/c inlet. I wish I would of contacted you before I drilled a gaping hole on my charge pipe then it would look as cool as yours with the tandeum setup. You and a few others on this forum gave me this idea and with yours running I said why not mine. I have pics of your write up saved to my laptop for reference and will look close to yours when completed.

C36ickness...I am still running the stock C43 trans but will be exchanged for 55k trans later when the car runs correctly. I just want one headache at a time

AMS...coming in under 10k. Keep in mind all modifications were done by me, so labor is free.

Your stock ECU will run the car, so you can tune on it. Only down side is only the 55k cars know how to control the SC clutch. A simple 12V wire will engage it all the time. It makes for gobbs of TQ and power off the line.

I'm very interested in seeing what you come up with to solve some of the minor issues Like EGR and Air pump. I will get under my hood and try and score you some pics if you think they may help ya.

You car is going to rip thats for sure.

dang makes me want to call my shop and tell them to clear a space in their garage and then go out and find a 55K motor! Once tuned it should walk most Kompressor cars since the 202 weighs probably about half of an CL, S, E

Keep the pics coming!
