Engine whining noise...
It follows the sound of the revs and is particularly noticeable down low.
Sounds almost like straight cut gears.
Any ideas what this might be? Only started after having the above work done.
As a side, the tapping noise of the lifters is still there also, so it seems that it's just the nature of this engine and these will wear down....

Is there anything simple that I can do that will give an indication of whether it's likely to be either of the above?
Listen under the hood while someone revs the engine slightly.... Alternator, power steering and water pump are far apart enough from each other that you should be able to tell which is making the noise...
we'll need a video of the noise. as others mentioned if your power steering mesh filter is slightly clogged it'll make a whining noise as well. my mechanic cleared my screen when he replaced my fluid a few years back. power steering whine has yet to come back.

One way to rule out the accessories is to pull the serpentine belt and run it for a 15 seconds with the belt off and see if the sound is gone.
My only other thought would be that the cam adjusters have a gear plate on the back of them that is tensioned to keep the cam adjusters tight against the gear with no slop, if someone didn't put the new ones in right and that has no tension on it when installed I would imagine that could cause a whining noise.
Maybe get a mechanics stethoscope and pinpoint the noise if it is coming from an accessory or under the cam cover.

Started the car OK and let it warm up.
Went off down the street and found the engine was really unresponsive, and then started to get vibrations and CEL light.
Limped back home and turned off.
Had the local RAA come out and he read the following codes:
- P0017 - Crankshaft Position Sensor
- P0301 - Cylinder 1 Misfire detected
- P0302 - Cylinder 2 Misfire detected
- P0303 - Cylinder 3 Misfire detected
- P0304 - Cylinder 4 Misfire detected
Is there any chance that this issue and the whining noise are related?

Yes... I was surprised that it was still there too, though from reading other threads on here it seems that it's not uncommon to have the noise return?
Reading what you've said above re. the adjusters and my new issue (see above), I'm wondering if these are related?

Seems the full code should be something like this p0017 crankshaft position-camshaft position correlation-bank 1 sensor B, so it is unhappy about the crank position compared to the cam position of one of the cams so mostly likely a cam position error based on the work you have had done.

The services record shows clearing of codes and camshaft (re)learning procedure?
Anyway, that is all working fine now.
The whine is still there however.
I've uploaded a video now, so interested to get peoples thoughts before I take it back yet again.
The whine is fairly apparent in the audio, to my ears at least.

To me it sounds like power steering pump whine, does it change in tone at all if you move the steering a bit?
Not sure how technical you are, one easy test would be to remove the serpentine belt for a minute and see if it goes away, that will tell you if it is an accessory or not. The other option is a mechanics stethoscope and and probe around and see if the sound is the power steering pump or another accessory or from the cam covers or somewhere.
And at least I’m not imagining it either...
I’m nearly due for a service so will get them to look again, though last time they thought the noise was usual... it’s hard to find a good mechanic.
After removing the serpentine belt, the noise was still there.
They tested a few other '63 cars in the workshop also, and they all had the noise to varying degrees.
The conclusion they came to was that it's the camshaft adjusters and drive gear. These are essentially straight cut, which is the noise, and it's common to all M156s.
Logically would follow the rpm of the engine also.
I’ve owned my ‘08 since new and it has always had this whine. Yours seems a little louder but might just be the video quality. I wouldn’t worry too much!
I’ve found that reading the forums can make you find “problems” that aren’t really problems. Sometimes that can decrease your enjoyment of a really great car. Mine has been flawless, minus a faulty Crank Position Sensor that was replaced right after I took delivery.
Take care,
