Show me your front rolled fenders...
I have finally accumulated a reconditioned staggered set of 2001 E55 AMG wheels that I plan on putting on my 97 E420. I want to go with the stock 2001 wheel size:
FRONT:
245/40/18
18 x 8” ET31
REAR:
275/35/18
18 x 9” ET35
front with such a low ET may put it very close to, if not actually, touching the
inside of the fender lip.
when 'rolling' is done, you're not really rolling the fender to induce a reshape of
the fender, but just the inside of the lip. as shown below, where the edge of
the lip is quite pronounced and felt by hand.

be it with baseball bat, large pipe, or an Eastman (et al) roller, they all serve
primarly to modify only the lip itself. the result gives you about 5mm more
clearance on the inside. The outside remains pretty much the same unless
you opt for serious fender rolling, which may require hammering and reforming
of metal.
I've had a 245 on ET31 from a W211 E55 which I put on my W210 E320.
I didn't have rubbing unless 1) I encountered nice dip in the road which induced
wheel compression of 2-3" or more, or 2) after I lowered 1.25" nearly every dip
resulted in lip rub. the outside edge of the tread...then down to towards the
sidewall showed slight shreading of rubber.
I didn't gamble on 235/40 and just went to 225/40 to cure the problem. yes,
I could have experimented with different 235 profiles to see which would
scrape and which didn't. But I didn't have the time, nor the money to chase
this angle.

Here’s some additional information:
I have bilstein HD shocks with 40k miles on them. I lowered the car a few weeks ago, I did a cold cutting of one full coil in the front, and ¾ coil in the rear. I have the front left running a #3 pad, with the front right running a #1 pad to balance out the sagging left spring I have.
I then put on a front wheel as a test with a 245/40/18 Michelin Pilot sport tire. Oddly enough I seemed to have enough clearance and didn’t experience any rubbing during my test. My only guess is that the pilot sport wheels must be the right width for this setup, albeit expensive.
I’ve priced camber arms from lensolo, he wants 265 for the rear, which currently shows a negative 3 degree camber with my 17 inch sport wheels. We’ll see what happens when I put the monoblocks on.
Yes, the staggered setup with 275’s in the rear will look dramatic, but I that’s partly what I looking for. If I go with these stock E55 tire sizes I may have to put in #2 or #3 pads in the front, or maybe even roll the fenders.
I need to save up for tires, camber bolts, and my brake sensor will be going on soon, so add new front rotors and brake pads, etc, etc. I'll need around $1,300 dollars to finish this job- good thing I have another car to drive.

235/45R17 and 265/40R17 would be dead on to oem diameter abs,esp,cruise control and speedometer would all be accurate.
Within 3% is the guide line for margin of error and you are over 8%

or you copied down your tire sizes wrong

Everyone said I was crazy when I did a colt cut on my stock E420 springs, but the result is incredible. I can't even look at stock springs on a E420 without make my aforementioned comment...
